Lead Software Engineer

About the role

We're hiring a Lead Software Engineer for Gold Fish Casino Slots. The role involves improving a nine-figure-revenue PHP codebase that's been shipping continuously for over a decade. The position requires deep technical expertise and the ability to make strategic decisions about code execution and personal scope.

Responsibilities

• Work with engineering leadership on the roadmap and tradeoffs
• Set technical standards by example
• Mentor mid-level engineers through complex work
• Write code that runs in production
• Think about load, failure modes, and system stability
• Investigate and learn using AI as a tool
• Surface tradeoffs and risks early with evidence
• Write clear and actionable design documents and PR descriptions
• Conduct effective code reviews to improve the team
• Escalate issues when necessary

Requirements

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with significant time as a senior or lead engineer on a production system
• Deep PHP knowledge, including Composer, dependency injection containers (Symfony DI or equivalent), and static analysis
• The ability to call priorities at two levels: technical execution order, and your own scope
• Experience with large-scale architectural refactors on legacy PHP
• Production experience with modern observability stacks (metrics, tracing, profiling, structured logs)
• Experience in the live-service games industry or another high-throughput, revenue-critical consumer service
• Experience with Vue.js or jQuery
• AWS or similar cloud technology experience
