Lead Software Engineer, Agentic Technology (Enterprise Platform)
About the role
Capital One is seeking Full Stack Software Engineers who are passionate about marrying data with emerging technologies. As a Capital One Lead Software Engineer, you'll have the opportunity to be on the forefront of driving a major transformation within Capital One. We are hiring a Lead Software Engineer to build the agentic orchestration runtime that powers Capital One's AI content generation platform. You will own the generator→critic agentic workflow harness — the orchestration engine that coordinates AI agents to produce, evaluate, and refine marketing content through a structured, bounded pipeline — and the broader agentic infrastructure that supports AI-assisted content migration and content management automation.
Responsibilities
- Build and operate the agentic workflow harness — implement the generator agent, critic agent, multi-section parallel orchestration, and bounded revision loop that form the core of the AI content generation pipeline
- Integrate the agentic pipeline with the enterprise LLM model gateway — manage API calls, handle rate limiting, implement backpressure, and instrument latency and quality metrics
- Lead a portfolio of diverse technology projects and a team of developers with deep experience in distributed microservices, and full stack systems to create solutions that help meet regulatory needs for the company
- Share your passion for staying on top of tech trends, experimenting with and learning new technologies, participating in internal & external technology communities, mentoring other members of the engineering community
- Collaborate with digital product managers, and deliver robust cloud-based solutions that drive powerful experiences to help millions of Americans achieve financial empowerment
- Utilize programming languages like JavaScript, Java, HTML/CSS, TypeScript, SQL, Python, and Go, Open Source RDBMS and NoSQL databases, Container Orchestration services including Docker and Kubernetes, and a variety of AWS tools and services
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree
- At least 4 years of experience in software engineering (Internship experience does not apply)
- At least 1 year experience with cloud computing (AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud)
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree
- 7+ years of experience in at least one of the following: JavaScript, Java, TypeScript, SQL, Python, or Go
- 3+ years of experience with AWS, GCP, Microsoft Azure, or another cloud service
- 4+ years of experience in open source frameworks
- 1+ years of people management experience
- 2+ years of experience in Agile practices
- Experience leveraging interactive AI tooling to accelerate productivity, utilizing capabilities beyond basic code completion
- Experience with agentic or multi-step LLM pipeline design — LangGraph, LangChain, or equivalent orchestration framework; understanding of how to structure tool calls, state management, and conditional branching in a multi-agent workflow
- Experience building with LLM APIs (OpenAI-compatible or equivalent) in production — you should understand prompt construction, response parsing, token budgeting, and error handling in real service contexts, not just Jupyter notebooks
Pay
- Richmond, VA: $179,400 - $204,700 for Lead Software Engineer
- McLean, VA: $197,300 - $225,100 for Lead Software Engineer
- This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI)
