Lead School Nurse

ACCEPT Education Collaborative is a regional non-profit educational organization with locations in Medway and Natick, MA. ACCEPT provides a wide range of programs and services including special education for students with moderate to severe needs, specialized transportation, home-based services, behavioral and educational consultation, and professional development. Programs address autism spectrum disorders, emotional/behavioral needs, global impairments, cognitive/intellectual disabilities, language disorders, ADHD/ADD, and nonverbal learning disability.

About the role

Oversees a team of school nurses, making decisions and directing student care initiatives. Collaborates with nursing staff at all of ACCEPT’s locations on daily student care. Provides skilled nursing care and management of students in all of ACCEPT’s programs.

Responsibilities

  • Manages medical interventions for all students – diabetes management, first aid, wound care, etc.
  • Develops individualized health care plans, and attends student IEP meetings
  • Works closely with parents and health care providers to meet the medical needs of students
  • Coordinates and communicates with parents, outside providers and ACCEPT Director of Student Services
  • Consults with ACCEPT Director of Student Services to make decisions relative to medical services
  • Administers oral and enteral medication as needed
  • Co-manages and helps develop student and staff wellness programs
  • Provides G-tube care and feedings, & seizure monitoring as needed
  • Manages, directs and provides guidance to School program nurses
  • Oversees policy and procedure maintenance
  • Occasionally travels to other ACCEPT locations (Natick and Medway) as well as travel with students to off-site trips
  • Organizes meetings and professional development requirements for all nursing staff
  • Delegates medication administration and trains staff on usage of Epinephrine auto-injector (epipen)
  • Works collaboratively with other disciplines to provide optimal care for students
  • Coordinates an ongoing continuing education program for staff to facilitate licensure requirements and maintain clinical skills
  • Encourages staff to participate in pertinent conferences and workshops addressing school health issues
  • Creates and implements new procedures and documentation regarding health curriculum
  • Participates in district-wide school safety planning; review and revision of school safety plans, multi-hazard planning, crisis team trainings, etc.
  • Communicates with nursing and program staff to provide updates on new procedures and policies
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Services or the Executive Director

Requirements

  • BSN/RN current and in good standing with the MA State Licensing Board
  • DESE License current and in good standing with the MA State Licensing Board
  • 5+ years of experience as a School Nurse
  • CPR Certified
  • Certified to administer epinephrine auto-injector training to staff
  • Experience with pediatric g-tubes, diabetes, and urostomies
  • Experience caring for students with mental or behavioral disorders
  • Cognitive skills as related to the position

Qualifications (Preferred)

  • Master’s degree in Nursing
  • Experience with SNAP documentation
  • Safety Care Training
  • Bilingual (Spanish/Portuguese)
  • Experience in support services in a school setting; special education; trauma-sensitive environments; challenging behaviors
  • Experience with Google Cloud Platform
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience
  • Postgraduate Certificate degree

Physical Demands and Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the nurse spends a considerable amount of time walking, bending, stretching, and occasionally assisting in patient transfer. Must guard against back injury when assisting in student lifts and transfers; follow proper body mechanics for lifting/moving students. May face hazards from exposure to chemicals and infectious diseases.

  • Required to sit, use hands to type, handle or feel objects, use needles, reach with hands and arms, bend, walk up and down stairs, talk, hear, see, stand for prolonged periods of time, stretch, have visual acuity and fine motor skills
  • Assist in student lifts and transfers, lift up to 50 lbs, and assist with lifting a young adult
  • Perform physical restraint of a student at times of behavioral escalation
  • Routinely use standard office equipment such as computers, copy machines, fax, phones, shredders, and filing cabinets

This work is performed in a school environment.

Pay

$55,600 to $113,500 per year
