About the Role

The Lead Registered Dental Assistant provides leadership, oversight, and mentorship to fellow dental assistants. As a partner to JWCH and an organizer of the dental department, the Lead RDA supports dental care delivery by assisting in the performance of dental procedures and carrying out the day-to-day operations of the back office.

Responsibilities

  • Supports dentist(s) during patient procedures through 4-handed dentistry and supervises other dental assistants.
  • Leads Dental Assistants through daily functions, including suggestions to Dental Manager for training modifications or further training of Dental Assistants, recommendations for corrective actions, and monthly assignments.
  • Trains new hires.
  • Holds daily/weekly staff huddles in collaboration with Dental Manager and Lead Dentist.
  • Assists patients in resolving minor difficulties, answering their questions, and giving directions to patients as authorized by the dentist or hygienist.
  • Prepares operation procedures for patient treatment as per Dental Department protocols and the dentist’s directions.
  • Completes digital dental radiographs and takes intra-oral pictures in accordance with state regulations and law, as well as Dental Department directives and protocols.
  • Performs independent procedures as delegated by the dentist, such as taking alginate impressions, fabricating temporary crowns, applying dental sealants, and coronal polish in accordance with state regulation, law, and Department directives and protocols.
  • Maintains all Dental Department equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s directions and Dental Department policy and protocol.
  • Maintains and completes adequate supply inventory and compiles a list of individual item shortages for inventory control to order and review monthly with the Dental Manager.
  • Maintains a daily list of all scheduled Dental Department patients, monitors patient flow, and assists the dentist(s) in assuring that all patient records and documents are properly and accurately completed and filed.
  • Receives and places necessary telephone calls consistent with professional matters, clinic business, and patient care of the Dental Department.
  • Ensures the sterility of all reusable dental instruments and equipment in accordance with Dental Department directives and protocols.
  • Ensures the proper disposal of all contaminated or potentially contaminated materials in accordance with Dental Department directives, clinic policy, as well as state and federal regulations.
  • Participates in appropriate health promotion/disease prevention activities, both on-site and off-site as required.
  • Maintains Dental Department compliance relative to Infection Exposure Control, safety, and HIPAA as required by local, State, and Federal guidelines, Dental Department directives and protocols, and clinic policies and procedures.
  • May be required to perform front office duties such as scheduling and confirming appointments, verifying insurance/other pertinent patient eligibility, checking patients in and out, collecting co-pay and balance due, and managing patient flow to reduce cycle time and enhance the patient experience.
  • Other duties as assigned by Dental Manager.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED certificate required.
  • Active Class A driver’s license required.
  • Customer service experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of specific issues related to Oral Health Education for children, adolescents, pregnant women, and chronic medical conditions such as HIV, Diabetes, high blood pressure, and cancers.
  • Graduation from a California Board-approved RDA educational program.
  • RDA licensure by Dental Board of California.
  • Completion of 2-hour CA Dental Board-approved CA Dental Practice Act course.
  • Radiation Safety Certificate.
  • 8-hour Infection Control course per California Dental Board guidelines.
  • Completion of AHA-approved course in Basic Life Support/CPR.
  • Coronal Polish certificate.
  • Bilingual: English/Spanish is required.
