About the role

Curiosity Lab is a STEAM-focused, neurodiversity-affirming program blending inquiry-based learning, Montessori-informed structure, project- and place-based learning, and outdoor exploration. We're seeking a Lead Teacher to guide a true multi-age classroom, building on established curriculum while adapting it to children's interests and needs.

Responsibilities

  • Design and lead hands-on, integrated STEAM/play-based learning for a multi-age Preschool–Kindergarten group, adapting established lesson plans to children's interests, strengths, and developmental needs.
  • Teach through a neurodiversity-affirming, strengths-based lens: flexible routines, sensory/communication supports, and co-regulation over compliance-based approaches.
  • Lead approximately 2 hours of outdoor, place-based learning daily — school grounds, nature walks, and trips to KiDiMu, BIMA, and the waterfront.
  • Lead and mentor a classroom team (1–2 Teaching Assistants, an Instructional Aide) and coach student teachers/practicum students from area colleges.
  • Build warm family partnerships; observe and document children's learning through notes, photos, and portfolios.
  • Maintain a safe, organized classroom and follow KiDiMu and Washington DCYF policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Normally 2+ years working with children ages 2.5–9 (classroom, camp, museum, outdoor ed, arts, or science program); exceptional recent grads with strong practicum/student-teaching experience also considered.
  • Enthusiasm for or background in a STEAM-related area, with experience planning hands-on experiences for children.
  • Eligible to meet WA DCYF Center Lead Teacher requirements — KiDiMu supports MERIT/STARS setup and an approved PACE or equivalent pathway.
  • Comfortable teaching outdoors in all Pacific Northwest weather and working alongside two classroom therapy dogs; able to actively supervise children indoors, outdoors, and on community walks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ECE or related degree, ECE/CDA/Montessori credential.
  • Multi-age or neurodiversity-affirming classroom experience.
  • Experience mentoring assistants or student teachers.

Benefits

  • $26–$32/hour, based on experience, education, and credentials.
  • 10 paid holidays and 2 weeks paid vacation.
  • WA paid sick leave.
  • $300/month employer health contribution.
  • Free KiDiMu museum membership.
  • 50% tuition discount for your child at Curiosity Lab.
  • 4+ hours/week protected, paid planning time.
  • Paid onboarding, required training, and ongoing coaching.
  • Up to $500/yr for approved coursework/professional development, plus paid registration (up to $200) for one conference each year.
  • $500 annual classroom innovation budget.
  • $100 annual outdoor-gear allowance.

Why join us

  • A supportive classroom team, established lesson plans and routines as a strong starting point (not a rigid script), and real paid training and coaching — including guest sessions from OTs, PTs, and SLPs.
  • Room to grow: mentor Teaching Assistants and student teachers, and help shape curriculum and documentation systems as the program grows.
