Lead Piping Designer

About the Role

As a lead designer, you will supervise and provide technical direction to a team of designers, ensuring the total delivery of mechanical and piping deliverables and services on time, within budget, and meeting quality expectations. This role involves advanced design work, serving as a technical specialist for complex assignments, and requires extensive progressive experience in mechanical and piping design. You will work under minimal supervision while utilizing project controls for cost, schedule, and quality.

Responsibilities

• Utilize and ensure adherence to department design and drafting standards.
• Recognize and communicate project scope, specifications, and design criteria to the project task team.
• Identify and promptly communicate scope and design changes.
• Provide on-site assistance during startup.
• Offer technical guidance to less experienced drafting personnel.
• Coordinate work activities with other staff members and the discipline lead.
• Produce mechanical and piping installation specifications with engineering review and approval.
• Understand the skills and experience required to perform design functions.
• Proactively lead and coordinate the efforts of a design staff to achieve scope, schedule, and budget objectives.
• Mentor subordinates and participate in squad checks to ensure coordination between design disciplines.
• Check calculations made by other designers for accuracy, conformance to codes, specifications, and good engineering practice.
• Determine construction quantities and provide construction cost estimates.
• Delegate work to designers based on their technical skills and experience, ensuring efficient progress and quality.
• Consult with design leaders from other disciplines to ensure efficient progress and quality.
• Participate in planning training programs, continuous education opportunities, and professional development of staff.

Requirements

• Associate degree in Engineering Technology or Computer-Aided Drafting (required).
• SPED (Society of Piping Engineers and Designers) Certification (preferred).
• 25 or more years of relevant industrial experience in mechanical/piping drafting and design.

Skills

• Knowledge and application of piping materials and supports.
• Design of moderately complex process and utility piping systems, including those unique to the industry served.
• Flexibility analysis of piping systems.
• Manual valve sizing, use, and application.
• Good design practices for sizing all piping systems, including compressible fluid piping.
• Identification, application, and specification of steam traps, liquid drainers, and safety valves.
• Selection of piping specialty items based on design criteria.
• Drafting of P&IDs and GA’s.
• Design of piping for specific equipment and inline instrumentation (e.g., pump suctions/discharges, tanks, control valve stations).
• Familiarity with specifications and installation details of construction bulk materials and equipment.
• Ability to create accurate mechanical/piping installation documents from vendor equipment drawings.
• Understanding of workflow/information flow between disciplines and schedule constraints.
• Ability to estimate task completion accurately and develop mechanical/piping installation specifications.
• Ability to develop construction cost estimates, detailed engineering schedules, and man-hour budgets.
• Knowledge and application of company engineering design and CAD drafting standards.
• Leadership skills to deliver on commitments and present services effectively.
• Proficiency in 2D AutoCAD and MicroStation.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong presentation skills and ability to work in virtual teams.
• Highly developed cross-divisional relationships and interoffice execution support.
