Position Summary The Lead Phlebotomist, coordinates daily phlebotomy and pre-analytical laboratory operations while providing hands-on specimen collection services and day-to-day guidance to phlebotomy staff. This role supports effective staffing and workflow, accurate laboratory order management, specimen integrity, staff education, inventory control, and timely resolution of collection and processing issues. The Lead Phlebotomist, promotes safe, efficient, and patient-centered laboratory services by maintaining compliance with established laboratory procedures, quality standards, regulatory requirements, and Trinity Health policies. Key Responsibilities Coordinates daily workflow and schedules or assigns staff to ensure adequate coverage. Maintains flexibility in working hours, including weekends and holidays, as needed, and participates in after-hours call coverage, alternating with the Phlebotomy/Laboratory Assistant Supervisor.Coordinate daily phlebotomy workflow, staff schedules, assignments, and workload distribution to maintain appropriate coverage and efficient laboratory operations. Perform venipuncture and other approved specimen collection procedures, verify laboratory orders and patient information, and ensure specimens are accurately labeled, processed, stored, and prepared for transport. Provide day-to-day guidance, training, orientation, and competency support to phlebotomy staff and serve as a resource for resolving specimen collection, processing, order, and workflow concerns. Manage pre-analytical laboratory activities, including specimen acceptability, reference and specialty testing preparation, waived testing, equipment quality checks, and required documentation in accordance with established procedures. Monitor collection and processing supplies, coordinate inventory and ordering activities, identify operational concerns, and communicate equipment, staffing, quality, or workflow issues to laboratory leadership. Collaborate with patients, providers, staff, couriers, and laboratory personnel to resolve service issues and maintain compliance with applicable quality, safety, infection prevention, privacy, and regulatory requirements.
