WSP is seeking a POWER Testing and Energization (PTE) Lead P&C Field Services Technician for project locations in Texas and Louisiana. This role involves leading field operations for complex construction, environmental, and infrastructure projects, providing expert technical guidance, and overseeing day-to-day site activities.

About the Role

  • Lead field operations for complex projects by providing technical guidance, hands-on execution, and oversight of site activities.
  • Apply extensive field experience to support day-to-day tasks, troubleshoot challenges, and uphold quality and safety standards.
  • Coordinate with engineers, scientists, and subcontractors to ensure compliance with regulatory and client requirements.
  • Mentor technicians, manage site logistics, and facilitate communication between field crews and project leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Perform testing and commissioning of Protection and Control systems on high-voltage substations.
  • Conduct on-site protective relay testing using relay test sets such as Omicron CMC 256/356 or Doble F6150 (e.g., SEL-311L, SEL-387, SEL-487, SEL-421, SEL-351S, GE L90, GE D60).
  • Execute and validate advanced protection and control testing sequences aligned with test plans, standards, and client specifications.
  • Follow safety protocols, participate in daily safety briefings, and conduct job hazard assessments.
  • Document site activities using field forms, digital tools, and mobile applications.
  • Perform equipment cleaning, inventory control, and calibration as directed.
  • Act as a primary field liaison with clients, contractors, vendors, and project managers to communicate progress, risks, and technical concerns.
  • Apply expert knowledge of field instrumentation and troubleshoot technical issues with minimal supervision.
  • Lead field implementation of health and safety protocols, job hazard analyses, and quality control procedures.
  • Manage field crews, assign tasks, monitor performance, and ensure consistency across work streams.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level technicians in technical procedures, safety practices, and documentation.
  • Support corrective actions by troubleshooting equipment or procedural issues and identifying solutions.
  • Monitor contractor compliance with site safety plans, environmental controls, and work quality expectations.
  • Lead field readiness planning, including tool inspection, site access coordination, utility marking, and weather contingency measures.
  • Participate in pre-construction meetings, regulatory inspections, and client walkthroughs as the senior field representative.
  • Ensure accurate data collection, reporting, and integration with project systems and databases.
  • Maintain oversight of fleet vehicles, tools, materials, and inventory to support site productivity.
  • Contribute technical expertise to incident response, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain a strong safety culture and encourage proactive hazard recognition and reporting.
  • Adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 11 years of experience in the electrical testing industry, including medium and high-voltage circuit breakers, power transformers, instrument transformers, and substation protection and controls testing.
  • Expertise in transmission, generation, or distribution relays (SEL, Basler, Beckwith, and GE families) and protective schemes.
  • Advanced technical skills in protective relays, including relay calibration using test sets (e.g., Omicron CMC 256/356, Doble F6150), control scheme testing, testing of sensing CT/PT circuits, and static/dynamic testing of microprocessor-based relays.
  • Experience with electrical field testing standards (NETA, IEEE, NFPA).
  • Knowledge of testing electrical distribution, generation, and transmission projects with voltage levels ranging from 15 kV to 500 kV, including protective relays and circuit breakers.
  • Proficiency in technical software: ProTesT, Protection Suite, ENOSERV RTS, Omicron Test Universe, and AcSELerator Quickset.
  • Ability to identify and respond to field challenges and equipment malfunctions.
  • Skill in preparing field logs, sketches, and digital reports.
  • Physical stamina for outdoor and demanding conditions.
  • Experience collaborating with contractors, technicians, and engineers.
  • Commitment to field safety, quality, and regulatory compliance.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for team collaboration.
  • Ability to support dynamic tasks, follow procedures, meet deadlines, and maintain accountability.
  • Commitment to continued learning and development in technical field services.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and ethical behavior in technical environments.
  • Reliable, punctual, detail-oriented, and able to work independently or in a team.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and adhering to WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
  • Willingness and ability to lift up to 35 pounds individually and up to 100 pounds with assistance.
  • Specific vision abilities: close vision, distance vision, basic color differentiation, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Willingness to travel (up to 80%).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Technology degree in a related discipline.
  • Experience in testing and troubleshooting electromechanical relays.
  • Experience in testing and commissioning electrical equipment on high-voltage substations (e.g., CTs, CCVTs, PLC systems, DC systems, batteries, and battery chargers).
  • Current OSHA 30-hour or 40-hour HAZWOPER certification.
