About the role
The Lead Operating Engineer reports directly to the Chief Engineer and serves as the Chief Engineer’s designated acting representative when required. This position is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation, monitoring, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of Central Plant equipment and associated mechanical systems. The role provides senior-level technical oversight of plant operations and supports continuity of facility operations in accordance with applicable safety, operational, and contract requirements.
Responsibilities
- Operate, monitor, and maintain Central Plant equipment, including boilers, HVAC systems, pumps, and associated mechanical and electrical systems.
- Perform inspections, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs to ensure reliable and efficient plant operations.
- Monitor operating conditions, temperatures, pressures, and equipment performance and respond to abnormal or emergency conditions.
- Serve as the senior operating engineer during assigned shifts and provide technical guidance and oversight to junior engineering personnel.
- Act in the Chief Engineer’s role when assigned and support coordination of engineering operations, maintenance activities, and operational priorities.
- Maintain required operating logs, records, and documentation and report equipment deficiencies or operational concerns.
- Ensure work is performed safely and in accordance with applicable regulations, procedures, and facility requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Safe and reliable operation of Central Plant equipment.
- Proper operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of plant mechanical systems.
- Timely identification and response to equipment deficiencies and operating conditions.
- Technical guidance and oversight of engineering personnel.
- Continuity of Central Plant operations and support to the Chief Engineer.
Requirements
- Secret security clearance.
- Third Class Steam and Hot Water Heating Boiler Engineer License (District of Columbia).
- Minimum five (5) years of experience in Engineering Services.
Qualifications
- Experience operating and maintaining Central Plant equipment in a large or complex facility.
- Experience with boiler, HVAC, and associated mechanical systems.
- Experience serving in a senior stationary engineering or operating engineer capacity.
- Experience troubleshooting and responding to plant equipment emergencies.
