Lead Medical Technologist

About the role

The Molecular STI Laboratory Lead Technologist will perform complex chemical and biological testing in the detection, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of disease. The Lead Medical Laboratory Technologist will work collaboratively with the laboratory team to provide testing services to clients. Additional tasks may be assigned at the discretion of the Supervisor, Manager, or Director.

Responsibilities

• Follow written lab procedures for the correct handling and processing of specimens.
• Perform lab procedures of moderate and high complexity in accordance with sectional laboratory procedures.
• Maintain an up-to-date working knowledge of all technical procedures in the department and operations of all instrumentation.
• Review all pertinent SOPs.
• Manipulate and operate simple and complex laboratory equipment, including computers; may perform maintenance, limited tear down, and replacement of parts; troubleshoot equipment malfunctions.
• Bring unusual situations to the attention of the Supervisor.
• Assist in the orientation and training of new employees; participate in the training of technical staff and monitor their progress with supervisor.
• Serve as a resource to peers and other personnel.
• Perform quality control procedures established for each method and maintain accurate records.
• Review and analyze quality control data, identify QC trends or problems, make judgments, and take appropriate corrective action.
• Operate laboratory instruments and perform routine maintenance; diagnose, troubleshoot, and document all lab instrument and/or reagent problems.
• Perform preventative and corrective maintenance/repairs and maintain records of actions; contact technical services representatives when necessary to resolve problems.
• Review Pending Logs, research and resolve missing specimen issues; escalate unresolved issues to the next shift or supervisor as needed.
• Participate in the evaluation and development of new procedures, methods, and instruments.
• Adjust schedule to meet the needs and demands of the company as required.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, chemistry, biology, or related life science and meets CLIA personnel standard criteria.
• 1 year of relevant work experience as a Medical Lab Technologist.
• State licensure where applicable (CA, FL, NY require licensing).
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Mathematical, computer, reasoning, and language skills at the college level (2 years).
• Ability to pass a colorblind test.

Qualifications

• Preferred ASCP or other national certification.
