LEAD MECHANICAL ENGINEER

About the Role

This position is responsible for production and assisting management with planning and coordinating all activities and projects related to the Mechanical Engineering Discipline. The role acts as a liaison both internally and externally for Mechanical Engineering services, interacting with Principals, Project Managers, Associates, Clientele, Consultants, Contractors, Vendors, and Agency Officials. The candidate will apply their Professional Engineer’s signature and stamp with responsible charge in accordance with local standards and project-specific Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements.

Responsibilities

• Participate in project design kick-off meetings and progress reviews with Mechanical personnel and Project Managers, and lead routine mechanical team meetings.
• Discuss mechanical discipline project scope, objectives, Owner Project Requirements, and budgets with clientele, Mechanical staff, and FAE Leadership.
• Review all Mechanical Engineering deliverables for technical content, quality, drawing clarity, completeness, and adherence to code and Owner’s Project Requirements in a timely and collaborative manner.
• Provide oversight and assistance with writing and editing project documents, specifications, and equipment selection for mechanical building systems and components.
• Conduct or delegate job-site observations to ensure projects adhere to specifications and design intent.
• Establish design standards and procedures to manage workflow for project tasks delegated to staff and project teams, and assist management in validating firm conformance to these standards.
• Conduct problem-solving and design troubleshooting initiatives to support clients and construction teams during the project close-out phase or post-construction evaluation. Report status, proposed next steps, and lessons learned to FAE Leadership.
• Participate in reviews with governing agencies for code compliance related to zoning laws, fire regulations, building codes, and other ordinances. Convey applicable changes in regulations to discipline personnel and FAE Leadership.
• Act as a mentor for mechanical discipline personnel by providing continuous assistance and support for professional training and career development.
• Maintain Professional Engineering License(s) and affiliation/membership with local, state, or national industry organizations such as ASHRAE.
• Perform duties in a professional and ethical manner to support FAE’s vision and core values.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college or university; Master’s Degree or other advanced education is preferred.
• Professional Registration as a Mechanical Engineer in the State of Florida; NCEES profile is a plus.
• Extensive familiarity and working knowledge of Florida Building and Energy Codes, ASHRAE codes, and NFPA codes.
• 15 years minimum experience in building systems design, with at least 7-10 years as an active Registered Professional Engineer (PE).
• Current affiliation and/or membership with local, state, or national industry organizations, including ASHRAE.

Qualifications

• Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with discipline personnel, office staff, and clientele.
• Demonstrated ability to promote and establish teamwork and individual leadership within the discipline.
• Ability to successfully and continuously lead a team of engineering professionals to meet and exceed project, discipline, and business unit goals.
• Extensive knowledge of building codes and construction systems specific to Florida’s climate and jurisdictions.
• Thorough working knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications and mechanical design software.
• Effective time management and organizational skills; ability to manage multiple projects and remain up-to-date on their developmental stages.
• Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills.
• AutoCAD experience is required; Revit experience is preferred.
• LEED AP and Building Systems Commissioning (CxA) certifications are a plus.
