Lead Mechanic

With over 370 locations across the U.S. and 5,700 associates, the company provides solutions to municipalities, private water companies, and professional contractors. The Lead Mechanic role is based in St. Louis and supports field service operations, performing specialized HDPE piping fusion, equipment repair, and maintenance while ensuring safety and quality standards.

Responsibilities

• Prepare accurate records on maintenance, repairs, and fuel levels of equipment.
• Maintain all decals, safety warnings, and company ID stickers.
• Complete work orders for internal and external repairs.
• Repair power and mechanical equipment.
• Maintain company vehicles and check/refuel equipment.
• Undertake complex repair and maintenance projects.
• Report safety violations to supervisor.
• Prepare equipment for rental shipment and inspect returned equipment for damages.

Qualifications

• Must be 21 years of age.
• Minimum of 3 years experience diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining McElroy fusion equipment or comparable hydraulic/electrically operated construction equipment.
• Demonstrated knowledge of polyethylene pipe fusion equipment, including preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair procedures.
• Proficient in diagnosing and repairing hydraulic systems (pumps, valves, cylinders, hoses, related components).
• Proficient in diagnosing and repairing electrical systems (wiring, control circuits, sensors, switches, electronic components).
• Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, hydraulic schematics, electrical diagrams, and manufacturer service documentation.
• Strong mechanical aptitude with safe operation of diagnostic tools and shop equipment.
• Valid Utah driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
• Ability to lift and move equipment and components in accordance with company safety standards.
• Willingness and ability to travel overnight as required for field service, manufacturer training, and other job‑related responsibilities.
• Ability to successfully complete required McElroy equipment training and maintain applicable certifications.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience servicing diesel‑powered, hydraulic, and electro‑hydraulic equipment in utility, pipeline, or construction industries.
• Possession of a valid Utah Commercial Driver License (CDL) with applicable DOT endorsements, or ability to obtain and maintain required CDL and endorsements within a specified period after hire.
• McElroy equipment training and/or certification.
• OSHA safety training and other applicable industry certifications.
• Experience in underground utility, pipeline, natural gas, water, wastewater, telecommunications, mining, or construction‑related industries.
• Mechanical field experience and additional industry‑specific safety, equipment, or operator certifications.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

• Regular exposure to temperature extremes, moving machinery, loud noises, and fumes.
• Intermittent periods of continuous physical exertion (walking, standing, stooping, climbing, lifting, and maneuvering material or equipment, some items 50 + pounds or awkward).
• Office base in Provo with travel to locations such as Las Vegas (~5.5 hours away) and various job sites.
• Overnight travel typical for 1–2 days, up to 2–4 days depending on repair severity.
