Lead Mechanic

About the Role

Lead, oversee, and participate in the complex and difficult work of staff responsible for maintaining, repairing, and overhauling mechanical engines and equipment. This is a safety-sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

Responsibilities

• Lead, plan, train, and review the work of staff responsible for maintaining, repairing, and overhauling mechanical engines and equipment on automobiles, buses, and heavy equipment.
• Plan, direct, and participate in all aspects of mechanical maintenance and repair work, including troubleshooting and repairing complex mechanical problems.
• Train assigned employees in proper maintenance work, safety methods, procedures, and techniques.
• Supervise the use, care, and operation of mechanical repair equipment, including machine lathes, grinders, voltage meters, and welding equipment.
• Verify the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications.
• Troubleshoot and repair electrical, engine, transmission, and chassis problems on City automobiles, buses, and heavy equipment; assign or perform necessary repairs.
• Test and repair components and equipment, including alternators, distributors, relays, lights, switches, air conditioning systems, and fuel injection systems.
• Perform welding and fabrication duties, including vehicle frame and body welding; ensure structural integrity of equipment.
• Perform safety inspections on assigned automobiles, buses, and heavy equipment; identify safety hazards and make necessary repairs and adjustments.
• Read and interpret blueprints, schematic wiring diagrams, hydrostatic systems, and components.
• Estimate time, materials, and equipment required for jobs; requisition materials as needed; distribute parts.
• Drive commercial class vehicles in the public right-of-way during delivery, pickup, and road tests.
• Deliver and pick up City automobiles, buses, and heavy equipment from outside repair vendors.
• Perform emergency road calls on disabled vehicles, diagnose operational problems, and perform repairs as required.
• Respond to public inquiries courteously, provide information within the area of assignment, and resolve complaints efficiently.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED, supplemented by two (2) years of technical training in automotive maintenance and mechanical repair.
• Four (4) years of experience in minor and major automotive maintenance and mechanical repair of a variety of vehicles and equipment.
• Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one by the date of hire.
• Possession of a valid City Operator’s Permit (COP) within six (6) months from the date of hire.
• Possession of a valid New Mexico Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or B) with a Passenger (P) endorsement within six (6) months from the date of hire.
• Possession of AC recovery and CNG fuel certifications within six (6) months from the date of hire.

ASE Certifications preferred.

Working Conditions

• Shop environment with exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, and heavy construction equipment.
• Physical demands include moderate lifting and carrying, bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, and standing for prolonged periods, as well as operating motorized equipment and vehicles.
