LEAD LEGISLATIVE ADVOCATE

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and implement legislative and regulatory programs at the state-level in other over a dozen states throughout the country
  • Develop and coordinate strategies to analyze and take positions on state legislation and regulatory proposals in California and NNOC states
  • Collaborate with union field staff and policy staff to implement the union’s state-level legislative and regulatory programs
  • Lobby members of California’s and other state’s legislatures and regulatory agencies to advance the union’s priority legislation and other policy measures
  • Develop and write position letters, testimony, talking points, and other advocacy materials on legislative, regulatory, and policy priorities set forth by the Union
  • Provide verbal comments and testimony on behalf of the Union
  • Support nurse membership involvement in legislative and policy advocacy
  • Build alliances with other organizations to advance the Union’s legislative and policy agenda

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of experience working professionally in a union or social justice advocacy organization or in a legislative advocacy or political coordinator position in California or other states
  • Demonstrated ability to independently execute state-level legislative or advocacy campaigns
  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of governmental relations and related issues
  • Ability to develop, build and maintain professional relationships with government leaders, staff, coalition partners and potential allies
  • Commitment to organizational discipline and implementation of directives set by the organization and its leadership
  • Highly developed communication and verbal advocacy skills
  • Highly developed written and analytical skills, including editing skills
  • Highly developed policy research and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with allied organizations and labor unions
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and coordinate the implementation of policy or legislative advocacy campaigns collaboratively in a team
  • Effective time management skills, including demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and projects
  • Occasional national travel as needed

Preferred Experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge on health care and nursing workforce policy areas
  • Experience with labor or health policy issues
  • Experience with political campaigns or political coordination
  • Experience implementing legislative or political programs of a labor union
  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant advanced degree
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Excel, Word)
  • Ability to travel extensively and valid driver’s license

Pay

Competitive salary of $106,236 to $196,356 dependent on skills and experience.
