About the Role

The Medical Laboratory Technologist performs all procedures related to the pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical processing of patient specimens, including maintenance and quality control of test equipment. Cross-training is encouraged in all areas of the laboratory.

Responsibilities

• Accurately identify patient specimens using two identifiers.
• Adhere to the specimen rejection policy; document, investigate, and resolve rejected specimens.
• Perform and document all scheduled quality control and equipment maintenance, including cleaning, calibrating, and monitoring humidity/temperature.
• Perform procedures accurately and according to policy, completing testing within established turn-around-time for routine and STAT testing.
• Notify the Supervisor and Lead Technologist of IT issues with instrumentation and LIS; call the HELP desk for computer system (e.g., Epic) problems.
• Adhere to all mandatory Infection Prevention Practices.
• Operate, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot instruments; reject specimens that do not meet criteria.
• Ensure telephone reports are given and documented as per protocol; record all results accurately and legibly.
• Review daily QC and workload; ensure all reports are completed within the specified time frame.
• Document equipment maintenance, including temperatures, cleaning, and calibrations.
• Take corrective action for any out-of-control situations and document as per section protocol.
• Review and verify abnormal results and critical values.
• Handle inquiries from the Medical Staff according to Department policy and report to Supervisor.
• Assist in coordinating continuing education and training for students and employees.
• Support Supervisor in completing employees’ competency documentation and evaluating personnel performance.
• Assist Supervisor to ensure the section meets standards set by governing agencies (DOH, JCAHO, OSHA, AABB).
• Assume Supervisor’s responsibilities in their absence and keep the Administrative Director informed of laboratory status.
• Order supplies and maintain inventory as per section protocol.
• Assist in coordinating the performance, distribution, and response of all proficiency tests (e.g., NYS, WSH).
• Perform special studies or projects approved by the IRB when requested by supervisor.
• Assist in evaluating new methods and equipment, including cost and method analysis.
• Accept additional duties and devote attention to providing excellent customer service.
• Utilize available resources to reach sound decisions and assume responsibility for problem-solving.
• Work collaboratively toward shared goals, including participation in department problem-solving and improvement activities.
• Demonstrate awareness of and respect for cultural diversity among co-workers, patients, and customers.
• Comply with all MMC/CHS policies and procedures, including Corporate Compliance, HIPAA, Joint Commission, and other regulatory agencies.
• Meet attendance and punctuality guidelines.
• Foster change initiatives for continuous performance improvement and service excellence.
• Perform job functions in adherence to a culture of safety; identify and communicate safety/risk issues to the department director.
• Promote teamwork and collaboration.
• Meet annual mandatory education requirements and hospital-required health screenings.

• Complete goals and assigned projects in a timely manner.

Requirements

• B.S. Degree in Medical Technology, Biology, or the physical sciences.
• 3-5 years of Clinical Laboratory Experience.
• New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist License is required.

Pay

USD $56.28 - USD $70.76 per hour. This range does not include differential pay or other forms of compensation that may be applicable, nor does it include the value of benefits.
