About the role

Works under the direction of the Zone Supervisor (Heavy Equipment). Operates all types of heavy equipment, including but not limited to crawler tractor, front-end loader, back-hoe, hydraulic excavator, motor grader, crane truck, and street sweeper with a high degree of skill and proficiency. Leads and provides guidance to assigned sweeper crews during various shifts within the city limits.

Responsibilities

  • Instructs assigned sweeper operators on work procedures, proper use of equipment, and maintenance of the equipment.
  • Submits work orders and supply requests.
  • Prepares various reports including on-the-job injuries, property damage, and required monthly reports which are submitted to the Manager.
  • Interprets city maps to find the location of work sites and assists sweeper operators in finding locations.
  • Assists in special events sweeping, when needed.
  • Maintains truck equipment, fluids, and fuels trucks.
  • Utilizes mobile radio to communicate with supervisors and other workers.
  • Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent and five (5) years experience operating heavy equipment and sweepers with at least six (6) months in a supervisory capacity; or any combination of experience and training which enable one to perform the essential job functions.
  • Must possess a valid Class "B" Tennessee Commercial Drivers License and must comply with Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) Alcohol and Drug testing rules.
  • Must pass a test designated by Human Resources to demonstrate ability to find various locations on city map.
  • Knowledge of the geographic area of Memphis preferred.
  • May be required to complete a battery of tests as deemed appropriate by Human Resources to evaluate competencies in operating heavy equipment.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and prepare reports as needed.
  • Requires the ability to operate sweepers and assigned equipment.
  • Requires the ability to climb on and off of the equipment.
  • Requires lifting (approx. 50 lbs.) to assist in maintenance of equipment or to change attachments.

Working Conditions

  • Majority of work is performed outdoors to inspect grounds and perform job duties.
  • Must be available to work nights and weekends, when necessary.
  • May be exposed to dust, dirt, noise, traffic, and all types of weather conditions.
  • Weekends or 2nd and 3rd shift hours may be required.
