Lead Heavy Equipment Operator

About the Role

The Heavy Equipment Operator Lead reports directly to the Operation Supervisor and is responsible for the management and leadership of heavy equipment operations at the landfill. This role involves processing trash by compacting and pushing waste with a dozer, placing soil cover over trash using loaders, excavators, and rock trucks, and operating additional equipment such as water trucks, roll-off trucks, and backhoes.

Responsibilities

• Ensure the tipping table is clean and orderly to accept daily trash.
• Keep tipping table trash safely arranged to allow loaders to remove recyclables.
• Inspect assigned equipment and prepare pre-trip and post-trip reports as required.
• Prevent hazardous and prohibited wastes from entering the transfer station and landfills.
• Maintain a clear tipping table for safe customer unloading.
• Be aware of emergency contacts and procedures.
• Perform any other duties assigned by the Landfill Supervisor.
• Report any unsafe situations to the direct supervisor.
• Work overtime as needed.
• Manage day-to-day landfill operations and supervise the site when the supervisor is offsite.
• Provide outstanding customer service to the public, county inspectors, and staff.

Requirements

• Five (5) years’ experience working in a Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) landfill.
• High School Diploma and/or GED.
• Ability to read and understand safety rules, operating manuals, and maintenance instructions for assigned vehicles.
• Good communication skills.
• Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
• Understand and interpret site plans.

Preferred Qualifications

• Five (5) years’ experience as a Lead Heavy Equipment Operator in an MSW landfill.
• Bilingual – English/Spanish.
• Obtain 40 hours of HazWoper training, First Aid, and CPR within six (6) months of employment.

• Exposure to dust, smoke, fumes, odors, grease, oil, chemicals, wet/hot conditions, and noise.
• Works exclusively outdoors.

Pay

$35.12 hourly (includes prevailing wage, which combines the basic hourly wage and the value of fringe benefits).
