Lead Generation Mechanical Engineer

About the role

WSP’s Federal Power and Energy Team is seeking a Lead Generation Mechanical Engineer. The ideal candidate will be located in Boise, ID; Honolulu, HI; Virginia Beach, VA; or Huntsville, AL, though other locations may be considered. This role supports mission-critical facilities and energy infrastructure projects for the Department of Defense (DOD), focusing on 10 to 20MW scale campus generation design projects.

Candidates must have a solid understanding of reciprocating engine generators in single or paralleled configurations, including the control systems necessary for interfacing with load and other power sources. A strong grasp of codes and environmental requirements related to generator emissions and noise is also required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design of mechanical piping and equipment for renewable and fossil power generation facilities.
  • Perform piping design activities, including sizing, pressure drop calculations, stress analysis, pipe support design, pipeline lists, and valve lists.
  • Prepare plant layout drawings.
  • Perform high-complexity engineering designs, including analysis, calculations, research, and equipment selection.
  • Develop PFDs and P&IDs for power plant systems, including steam cycles, boiler feed, condensate, cooling water, water treatment, fuel gas, diesel fuel, and utilities.
  • Prepare sizing calculations, specifications, data sheets, RFQs, and technical bid evaluations for mechanical equipment such as reciprocating engines, gas turbines, steam turbines, heat recovery steam generators, condensers, cooling towers, auxiliary boilers, tanks, and pumps.
  • Evaluate, select, and apply engineering techniques, procedures, industry codes, and standards to projects.
  • Review mechanical equipment vendor drawings and data; interface and communicate with suppliers, clients, other engineering disciplines, and detailers/designers.
  • Prepare construction/installation scopes of work for mechanical systems.
  • Work individually or as part of a cross-functional team to execute project work on multiple concurrent projects, including installation layouts, cost and quantity calculations, and ensuring compliance with owner requirements, specifications, permits, and regulatory documentation.
  • Ensure project work conforms to contracts, scopes, specifications, permits, compliance documentation, and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare engineering budgets, schedules, and bills of quantities for material, equipment, and labor.
  • Prepare proposals for obtaining new work.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate deliverables.
  • Analyze and evaluate data from field investigations.
  • Comply with regulatory requirements for data integrity, documentation, procedures, training, monitoring systems, and record compliance.
  • Remain current with the latest mechanical engineering techniques and practices.
  • Develop plans, specifications, and cost estimates; prepare construction safety and phasing plans; and update mechanical infrastructure layout plans requiring coordination with owners, disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.
  • Provide guidance and training to entry-level engineers.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 10+ years of relevant mechanical engineering design experience with a focus on power generation projects, including design deliverables for large capital projects with single and parallel generation configurations.
  • Currently licensed Professional Engineer (PE).
  • Due to client requirements, U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Knowledge and experience with federal government project design, including direct application of UFCs, UFGSs, FCs, NFPA standards, and ICC standards.
  • Experience within a consulting environment.
  • Proven experience with client interaction as a senior mechanical subject matter expert, with the ability to lead and mentor others.
  • Proficiency in mechanical engineering principles, practices, design-bid-build, design/build, and their application to permitting and project-related issues.
  • Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management, including involvement in rehabilitation and new design projects.
  • Working knowledge of relevant engineering and mechanical construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Ability to self-perform all mechanical engineering tasks associated with projects, including proposals, site investigations, design, calculations, cost estimating, client meetings, and construction support.
  • Ability to perform and review technical computations and calculations, applying mechanical engineering principles and understanding plans and specifications.
  • Ability to plan and conduct construction observations and site engineering investigations, applying applicable regulations and policies.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with engineering and non-engineering audiences.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and adhering to health, safety, and drug/alcohol policies.

Skills

  • Experience with renewable and natural gas/diesel-fired generation plant design.
  • Experience using Caesar II or AutoPipe for piping stress analysis.
  • Experience using Thermoflow for power plant system modeling.
  • Solid foundation in CAD and BIM software such as AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Experience with SpecsIntact specification authoring and editing.
  • Experience designing to NAVFAC and USACE design standards.

Pay

Expected salary range (all locations): $119,600 – $213,200. WSP reserves the right to adjust compensation and benefits based on education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and geographic location.

Expected salary range (Colorado only): $119,600 – $200,100.
