Lead Field Systems Technician
NTE (North Tarrant Express) was the first design-build-finance-operate-maintain managed lanes project in Texas, involving the complete reconstruction of 13.3 miles of the I-820/SH-183 corridor between Dallas and Fort Worth. Since opening in October 2014, the project has reduced congestion time in general highway lanes by 70% and increased average speed by 15%. NTE 35W spans 16.8 miles from I-30 in downtown Fort Worth to Eagle Parkway at Alliance Airport, improving mobility through additional lanes and tolled express lanes. The LBJ Express is the largest public-private partnership (P3) operation in Texas, relieving severe congestion in north Dallas along I-635 and I-35E, with a 60% decrease in congestion time and a 10% increase in average speed since opening in 2015.
About the role
The Lead Field Service Technician will perform servicing, repair, and installation of Toll Collection Systems (TCS), Intelligent Transportation Subsystems (ITS), Network Communications Systems (NCS), and various traffic management devices, including Traffic Signals, Air Quality Monitors (AQM), First Responder Radio Systems (FRRS), Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS), and Reversible Lane System HOV. This role provides field support for troubleshooting, repair, installation, upgrades, programming, preventive maintenance, and documentation.
Responsibilities
- Provide training to junior Analysts on procedural, system familiarization, reporting, and day-to-day operations.
- Document and report customer and revenue-facing tolling issues proactively.
- Identify potential exceptions using Automated control reports.
- Analyze system data and trends.
- Collaborate with external service providers or analyze external interface data.
- Respond to corrective maintenance requests and alarms within the allotted time frame.
- Isolate faults in units and/or components.
- Diagnose and repair hardware, software, and system issues.
- Complete work order reports and logs.
- Perform shift-to-shift communications in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Escalate system issues and systemic problems to system maintenance.
- Collaborate with system maintenance on resolution approaches and review proposed system changes.
- Manage testing and verification of system changes after implementation.
- Install, maintain, and repair toll collection equipment, including lane controllers (servers & PC hardware), RFID, power supplies, closed-circuit television cameras, microwave vehicle detectors, network components (routers, switches, cabling), and dynamic message signs.
- Maintain spare equipment and parts, including inventory management and documentation.
- Install electrical conductors, data conductors, and fiber optic cable.
- Connect electrical conductors to power services to energize equipment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in IT, military training, or electrical engineering preferred.
- 5–8+ years of related experience in field support, information technology, tolling systems, and/or intelligent transportation systems.
- IMSA-II (Traffic Signal Tech 2) certification preferred but not required.
- Willingness to work weekends, holidays, nights, and be on-call as needed.
- Fundamental electrical/mechanical knowledge.
