Lead Engineer - Substation Design ( Hybrid Schedule)

About the Role
Lead Engineer is responsible for the development, expansion, planning, design, maintenance, and operation of the system and its equipment to meet the organization's mission and objectives. This position coordinates the evaluation of system failures and appropriate resolutions to provide support for unplanned maintenance. The role ensures that Eversource transmission and distribution systems are designed to high-quality standards, providing customers with safe, reliable, competitively priced, and environmentally sound electric service.
This position shares accountability with peers in the strategy, development, and design of the organization’s Life Cycle Plan, a comprehensive long-term plan for the transmission/distribution system. The Lead Engineer supervises, assigns, prioritizes, and directs the work performed by other engineers and staff.
Substation Engineering focuses on substation design, maintenance, and support, optimizing the cost and performance of substation equipment on the transmission/distribution system. This role supports emergent and/or equipment failures to assist operations and works with ISO-NE on all Transmission-level interconnects of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Solar Farms, and traditional generation requests. It also reviews substation upgrades and replacements to allow for Distributed Energy Resource (DER) interconnects into the distribution system.
Responsibilities
- Supervises, coaches, and develops engineers; approves time and conducts performance reviews.
- Assigns, prioritizes, and directs work performed by at least 2 FTE Engineers.
- Responsible for the cost and performance of certain assets on the system, including reliability analysis and trending of system events, and monitoring of equipment condition.
- Responsible for the development, justification, and approval of Life Cycle Plan activities over a multi-year horizon and for ongoing projects.
- Ensures the design and specification of additions, modifications, and replacements to the transmission and distribution systems, and the preparation of system electrical permits and related customer notifications, are completed accurately and on time.
- Responsible for the development of preliminary engineering designs and details as necessary.
- Collaborates with other engineers within Engineering to ensure consistency and teamwork.
- Provides technical support and direction to operating areas relative to system priorities, engineering guidelines, and operating decisions during normal and emergency situations.
- Accountable for root-cause analysis, development, and implementation of corrective actions.
- Responsible for the evaluation and selection of technology and equipment for the system.
- Responsible for the development of standards and procedures for design, operation, and maintenance.
- Assumes the role of the Manager as required.
- Expected to assist with storm duty and any other major events.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is required; Electrical Engineering degree preferred.
- Minimum of eight (8) years in the technical, operational, or engineering aspects of the electrical utility industry.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
- Knowledge of utility power systems is preferred.
- Ability to independently develop, present, and execute new projects through collaborations with other departments.
- Familiarity with power-related software is preferred.
- Must be available to work emergency restoration assignments as required.
- Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.
- Valid driver’s license is required.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed primarily in an office environment which requires sitting, standing, walking, and climbing stairs.
- May require traveling to operating districts and companies within and outside the state.
- Depending on the specific nature of the role, position may require occasional to significant travel by car.

- Current guidelines require employees to work at least three days in the office, including Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with the third day set by the employee and supervisor based on department needs. Pay
The annual salary range for this position is $145,670.00 - $161,860.00. This position is eligible for a potential incentive.
