About the role

We are seeking a Civil / Structural / Project Engineer to support the successful and on-time delivery of substation projects, including the capital investment plan, distribution and transmission interconnection projects, and other emerging work or new technologies. Substation projects include equipment replacement, asset separation, rebuilds, and greenfield (new) substations.

Responsibilities

• With minimal oversight, provide project, field, and real-time engineering for all civil/structural aspects of substation design and construction, covering minor equipment replacements, retrofits, rebuilds, and new substations.
• Collaborate with cross-functional and multi-discipline teams, including Electrical Engineers, Construction, Environmental, Permitting, Operations, Security, Project Management, Estimating, Real Estate, and Legal departments.
• Act as Design Engineer: create detailed civil/structural calculations and drawings for foundations, steel, and aluminum substation structures using applicable codes (ASCE 113, ASCE 7, ACI, AISC, ADM, NESC, IBC, State Building Codes).
• Act as Owner’s Engineer: provide project oversight by directing subcontractors, interpreting and reviewing submittals (calculations, drawings, material specifications, shop/construction/demolition drawings, surveys, LiDAR scans, test pits, borings).
• Participate in and/or present substation projects at municipal Planning Board and Zoning Board meetings outside normal business hours.
• Prepare Scopes of Work, issue RFQs, respond to RFIs, review bid packages, and award contracts.
• Conduct field inspections, determine cost-effective solutions, and develop comprehensive engineering reports based on design codes, procedures, and safety practices.
• Manage multiple projects simultaneously, develop and track schedules for engineering milestones.
• Prepare Technical Specifications and work with Procurement to order equipment and materials.
• Provide technical guidance, support, and mentorship to less experienced engineers.
• Willingness to work mandatory paid storm duty assignments.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering – Structural or geotechnical concentration preferred.
• Minimum of 12 years’ experience in civil/structural engineering; substation or electrical utility experience strongly preferred.
• PE license required in MA, or ability to obtain via reciprocity.
• Knowledge of structural and foundation systems, including steel, aluminum, and reinforced concrete.
• General knowledge of civil site design, stormwater design, and Federal/State/local permitting.
• Knowledge of oil containment systems and flood-resilient design preferred.
• General knowledge of substation equipment (transformers, circuit breakers, switches, reclosers, metal-clad switchgear, control houses) and construction/maintenance techniques is desired but not required.
• High level of personal initiative and ability to interact with diverse personnel; proven interpersonal and written communication skills.
• Effective time management, task prioritization, and ability to explain technical material to non-technical staff.
• Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word) and industry software (AutoCAD, MicroStation, RISA, MathCad, L-Pile).
• Valid driver’s license, dependable vehicle, and acceptable driving record.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills; ability to work independently.

Pay

$156,000 - $183,000 a year
