Lead Embedded Engineer

About the Role

As the Lead Embedded Engineer, you will act as the advocate for the customer, leading the team in providing customer solutions for all their network and core functionality-related needs on their products. Your priority is to advocate for the customer and provide coverage for all customers. Cat Electronics’ Common Services and Network Solutions section is responsible for developing embedded software libraries and data link standards used across Caterpillar’s line of machine and engine products. Our team develops software providing data link communication, information services, security, boot software, and other functions, delivering “best in class” solutions in data link communications.

Responsibilities

• Interact with customers/clients and the Common Services and Network Solutions (CSNS) Global Value Team.
• Support customer needs by listening to all network and CSNS scope requirements and requests.
• Bring requirements and requests to the global value team and act as the point of contact for the CSNS team to the customer.
• Assist in budget planning and negotiating schedules with customers.
• Interface between the customer and delivery team as the main contributor to the global value team.
• Prioritize requirements with the help of the global value team.
• Ensure platform hardware and necessary tools are in place from the customer for the team to work on.
• Facilitate Release Planning (ATEST, RC, and Production Intent) with the customer.
• Be accountable for customer issues and feature enhancements.
• Lead the requirements, design, development, and testing of network communication and foundational information software used in embedded systems on Caterpillar machine or industrial applications.
• Develop embedded ‘C’ and/or C++ code software solutions to meet system requirements.
• Develop software components that comply with software architecture standards.
• Follow a common process for embedded software development.
• Design and develop multiple or large software products.
• Contrast advantages and drawbacks of different implementations of embedded software, development languages, and tools.
• Estimate and monitor development time and costs based on functional and technical requirements.
• Provide consulting on both selection and utilization of developers' workbench tools.

Requirements

• Knowledge of tools, methods, and techniques of requirement analysis; ability to elicit, analyze, and record required business functionality and non-functionality requirements.
• Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools, and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and interpret ideas, information, and needs.
• Knowledge of the necessity and value of teamwork; ability to work cooperatively toward shared goals and support others at all levels.
• Knowledge of technical troubleshooting approaches, tools, and techniques; ability to anticipate, recognize, and resolve technical issues on hardware, software, application, or operation.
• Knowledge of a given technology and various application methods; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges.
• Extensive experience in performing and leading embedded software development for Caterpillar machine or industrial applications.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronics, or Computer Engineering or Computer Science, with 6 years of systems and software development experience.
• 4 years (concurrent) of experience in automotive, machine, or industrial embedded software development.
• Preferred: A master’s degree in Electrical, Electronics, or Computer Engineering or Computer Science, with 3 years of embedded network communication systems and software development experience.
• Preferred: Knowledge of AVB/TSN, Industrial Ethernet protocols, Autonomy and Automation middleware.
• Preferred: Experience developing and maintaining data link and networking protocol libraries, low-level network drivers utilizing CAN, CAN FD, J1939, and/or Ethernet communication library development.

Additional Details

This position requires working full-time onsite in Mossville, IL, five days a week. Domestic relocation assistance and visa sponsorship are available for this position. Up to 10% travel may be required.

Pay

Summary pay range: $128,470.00 - $192,710.00. Compensation and benefits may vary depending on job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance, and experience.
