Lead Electrical Engineer (Renewables)
About the role
This Opportunity WSP is currently initiating a search for a Lead Electrical Engineer (Renewables) to join our Power & Energy team in Billings, MT. The candidate will be involved in projects with our Power & Energy Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.
Responsibilities
- Supports technical staff, engineers, and project managers for the due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, permitting, design, development, and construction of utility, industrial, and commercial scale projects in the public and private sector.
- Tasks may include assistance with the research, design, concept development, and construction of transmission and distribution substations, power distribution, power regulation, renewable energy, as well as protection and control systems in a wide variety of contexts (utilities, transportation, building, and Federal, State, and local government projects).
- Generates accurate and concise reports and documentation regarding assigned material, installations, and construction specifications.
- Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.
- Aids Project Managers in bid evaluation and project planning.
- Leads design team from conceptual phase through completion and acts as an Engineer-of-Record for large complex substation and gen-tie projects.
- Participates in preparing technical proposals including scope, schedule, and budget.
- Acts as a technical liaison with clients, contractors, and vendors.
- Provides engineering support during construction including field inspections and witness tests.
- Provides training and mentorship to junior and intermediate engineers.
- Grows and manages relationships with alliance clients.
- Mentors less experienced staff in substation project execution.
- Led technical specifications development for large EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) projects, including development of project scope, schedule, and estimates.
- Performs and directs others in the detailed design of medium to extra high voltage utility substations including one-line diagrams, elementary and wiring diagrams, SCADA, communications, conduit and cable sizing/routing, substation physical layouts, selection of substation equipment, writing of substation equipment specifications, proposal development, construction cost estimates, and project scheduling.
- Ensures POWER quality procedures are followed and that the team is resourced in an optimal manner.
- Performs QA/QC for deliverables to clients across multiple offices.
- Manages all schedule, budget, and quality of assigned projects.
Requirements
- BS in Electrical Engineering, BS in Renewable Energy Engineering, BS in Civil Engineering and/or BS Mechanical Engineering degree, from an accredited university preferably with a power option.
- Professional Engineering license (PE), or eligible to obtain PE.
- Experience in 15kV through 500kV substation design and IEEE/ANSI standards.
- Experience in managing 3-5 people on a project team.
- Experience filling the role of project engineer for several projects occurring concurrently.
- A strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills to work effectively with internal team members and external client personnel.
- Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently in the U.S. without the need for work sponsorship.
Qualifications
- Seven (7) or more years of experience in substation design is preferred.

- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Knowledge of electrical engineering principles and practices.
- Experience with project management software.

Pay
Expected Salary (all locations): $103,500 - $176,000
