Lead EHS Engineer

Actalent is partnering with a pioneering public-benefit biotech/pharmaceutical corporation to advance cutting-edge R&D and operations, including new-construction and expansion projects for complex emerging technologies.

About the role

As the Lead EHSS Engineer you will establish and maintain corporate social-responsibility management systems that reflect the company’s mission and values. You will actively support business growth by engineering design and assessing new projects and processes for EHSS impact, participating in owner, architect, and contractor meetings. You will also drive program implementation across the enterprise, fostering continuous improvement and sustainability practices.

Responsibilities

• Oversee site water-use and discharge-control programs, including permit writing, agency notifications, monitoring requirements, periodic sampling, user reports, and records retention.
• Manage site waste management, including pollution prevention, chemical and biological waste removal, waste profiles, manifest maintenance, inspections, and environmental reporting and records retention.
• Complete chemical reporting and community right-to-know submittals; maintain electronic inventory records and SDSs of chemicals and identify materials on EPA or OSHA lists.
• Develop engineering controls for hazards such as biological agents, high-potent compounds, chemicals, energy sources, flammable liquids, and fall protection.
• Develop and implement temporary-worker and contractor safety protocols.

Requirements

• Minimum of 8+ years of relevant work experience in pharma, life sciences, or chemical engineering.
• 6+ years of EHSS experience in high-level expansion projects.
• Successful interface with multi-level regulatory agency personnel.
• EHSS management systems auditing experience.
• Project management skills with attention to detail, timelines, and results.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, engineering, or environmental engineering.
• Pharma or life sciences experience strongly preferred.
• Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) credential.
• Experience in an FDA-regulated environment.

Skills

• Significant technical expertise in environmental compliance and stewardship, including air, water, hazardous waste, materials management, and chemical reporting.
• Proven expertise in product stewardship, qualitative occupational exposure assessments, and high-potent compound safety.
• Expertise in health and safety compliance, including injury and illness prevention, materials handling, energy control, biosafety, radiation safety, laboratory safety, personal protective equipment assessments, occupational health, fall protection, and emergency preparedness.

Work Environment

This is a 100 % on-site role located at either the Durham, North Carolina or Silver Spring, Maryland facility. The position may require up to 10 % travel to other locations, conferences, or training. Schedule

This is a permanent, full-time position based in Durham, NC.

Pay

The pay range for this position is $105,500 – $150,000 per year. Individual compensation within this range will depend on qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
