About the role
To serve as a facilitator, coordinator and resource person for staff, patients and donors to ensure effective operation of the Blood Donor Center.
Responsibilities
- Act as a resource for staff when questions or problems arise.
- Aid Supervisor and/or manager with the day-to-day operation of the Blood Donor Center and blood drives ensuring effective daily department operations and participate in the staffing process to ensure adequate staffing.
- Train, orient and mentor new hires and/or students on procedures and operations of the department.
- Perform all aspects of whole blood collections, apheresis platelets collections, and therapeutic phlebotomy procedures.
- Prepare reports and statistical data of whole blood, platelets, and therapeutic phlebotomy performed for the department.
- Screen donors to ensure donor’s eligibility per CCHC, CDC, FDA, AABB, and CAP standards.
- Document accurately on all blood donor records and data entry including donor deferrals into the computer system and ensure all quality control standards are met.
- Perform quality control, instrument calibration, quality assurance and improvement, and develop new methodologies.
- Made recommendations for workflow practices, improvements in quality and/or efficiency to the immediate Supervisor.
- Review daily QC, cooler transport logs, deferrals, donor cards, donor adverse reactions, and other documents for accuracy, completeness, and in a timely manner.
- Prepare, send, and track donor deferral letters and physician notifications.
- Aid in writing and revising SOPs as needed.
- Perform daily inventory and replenishment of all donor care supplies as needed.
- Serve as a resource in responding to donor/patient complications in a safe, timely, and professional manner per CCHC policy.
- Aid in the design, implementation, and management of quality improvement projects, as well as the evaluation of data and recommendations.
- Aid in regulatory compliance and inspections.
- Aid in donor recruitment.
- Ensure workbenches, testing areas and other work areas in a clean, sanitary, and free of clutter condition for the safety of donors, patients, and staff.
- Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
- Maintain a thorough knowledge of departmental and Hospital policies and procedures as they pertain to the job, including but not limited to fire and disaster plans.
- Provide service excellence to all patients, family members, visitors, volunteers, and co-workers.
- Perform other work-related duties and activities as assigned or requested.
Qualifications
- Lead Donor Care Specialist I Grade S11A + $2/hr ; Job Code 8284
- High School Diploma or GED required. Associate or bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Three (3) years donor phlebotomy experience required. Minimum one (1) year apheresis phlebotomy experience required.
- National Certification in Phlebotomy required and must maintain certification.
- Current Donor Phlebotomy Technician, DPT (ASCP) Certification or Qualification in Donor Phlebotomy, QDP (ASCP) required and must be maintained.
- Current Basic Life Support certification and must maintain certification.
- Working knowledge of blood groups and Rh types and donation procedures.
- Experience in handling moderate and severe adverse donor/patient reactions.
- Prior experience with EMR systems preferred.
- Ability to read, write and communicate in English.
- Good interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and to work under pressure.
- Demonstrated strong leadership, organizational, communication and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to triage work to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain harmonious and cooperative relations with fellow employees, medical staff, patients and guests and serves effectively as part of the department team in performing professional service to patients.

- Must meet all requirements of Lead Donor Care Specialist I.
- Current Qualification in Apheresis, QIA (ASCP) Certification or equivalent required.
Schedule
32/40 flex hrs per week, 6a-2p, 7a-3p, 8a-4p, 9a-5p, 10a-6p, 11a-7p. Rot. days, Rot. weekends and Occ. holidays.
