Lead Data Architect

XpertDox is a healthcare AI company based in Scottsdale, Arizona. Our platform, XpertCoding, performs autonomous medical coding for outpatient healthcare organizations using machine learning and transformer neural networks. We are growing quickly and our data infrastructure needs to grow with us.

About the role

The internal title for this role is Director of Data Architecture, reporting to the CEO.

You will own how data moves through XpertDox. Today a significant part of our processing runs on SAS. Our next phase depends on moving to a modern data lake without disrupting production. That migration is yours to design and deliver, and you will keep the existing SAS environment running well while you do it.

This is a hands-on leadership role. You will set the architecture, write and review code, and build the team that runs it.

Responsibilities

• Own the data architecture strategy for the company and the roadmap to get there.
• Design and execute the migration from our current infrastructure to a data lake environment, including sequencing, cutover planning, and validation.
• Manage, optimize, and maintain the existing SAS infrastructure and codebase.
• Build the data pipelines that our AI, natural language processing, and automation teams depend on, working directly with those teams on requirements.
• Set standards for data governance, security, and quality, and enforce them across the organization. We handle protected health information, so this matters.
• Mentor the data engineering and programming teams and grow the function as the company grows.

Requirements

• Ten or more years in data engineering or data architecture, including at least three years owning architecture decisions for a production environment.
• Deep SAS experience: programming, code optimization, and infrastructure management. This is central to the role and not a nice to have.
• Demonstrated experience moving a legacy data environment to a data lake or modern cloud platform, from design through production cutover.
• Strong SQL and Python.
• Willingness to work on-site in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Preferred Qualifications

• Healthcare data experience, particularly claims, electronic health record extracts, or protected health information under HIPAA.
• Experience building pipelines that feed machine learning systems.
• Experience hiring and leading a small data team.

Why this role

You will be the first and final authority on data architecture at XpertDox. There is no layer of committees between your design and production. If you have spent years proposing modernization plans that never got funded, this is the opposite of that.
