Lead Custodian
About the role
The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) seeks a Lead Custodian to join our team at the Abilene State Supported Living Center. This role involves performing highly complex custodial tasks in state-supported living centers, including residents' homes, bedrooms, office spaces, and medical and activity areas.
Responsibilities
- Cleans various areas within the facility, including living areas/homes, residents’ rooms, office spaces, medical activity areas, corridors, restrooms, and other spaces.
- Uses appropriate cleaning agents and techniques to eliminate pathogens and maintain a sterile environment.
- Conducts inspections of the buildings and equipment to ensure cleanliness and safety standards are met.
- Manages the inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment.
- Provides backup support to other custodians as needed.
- Serves as lead to other custodians and assists the Custodial Manager in various aspects of managing the custodial team.
- Supports the Custodial Manager in creating and managing custodial schedules, training sessions, and maintaining high standards of cleanliness and hygiene.
- Analyzes current custodial operations and identifies areas for improvement.
- Maintains accurate records of custodial activities and collaborates with the manager to streamline workflows.
- Coordinates repairs and upgrades to building infrastructure and cleaning equipment.
Requirements
- Valid Texas driver license or obtain within 90 days of hire.
- One (1) year paid experience in custodial/housekeeping work.
- One (1) year experience working in an environment with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities and/or mental health disorders is preferred.
- Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent.
- Must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, and LEIE.
- Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.

- Knowledge of cleaning methods, standards, and sanitation regulations.
- Knowledge of infection control principles and methods.
- Knowledge of inventory control principles and methods.
- Skills in the use of custodial equipment, materials, and the safe handling of chemicals.
- Skills in the use and maintenance of building maintenance tools and equipment.
- Ability to track inventory and usage data.
- Ability to stay on task and complete work timely.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to lift 45 pounds.
- Ability to stand/walk on hard floors for extended periods.
- Ability to work harmoniously and productively with co-workers and patients.
- Ability to work irregular hours.

Pay
The starting salary range for this position is $3,170.92 - $4,149.83 per month, paid monthly.
Schedule
This position works a day shift and may require occasional weekend and holiday work. Flexible work hours may be required.
