About the role

The Alfond Youth & Community Center is seeking a Lead Cook to help fuel the children and families we serve by preparing and serving healthy, delicious meals and snacks in a fast-paced, team-oriented kitchen. You’ll assist in leading kitchen staff while maintaining a welcoming, safe, and sanitary environment.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and serve healthy, nutritious meals and snacks for AYCC childcare programs, including Pre-School, After-School, Summer Enrichment, and Teen Program participants.
  • Collaborate with the Food & Nutrition Services Director to create and distribute a monthly menu that meets or exceeds USDA standards for the persons served.
  • Maintain order, safety, sanitation, and cleanliness in accordance with State of Maine Health Department rules and regulations.
  • Maintain accurate records of the number of children served, production records (including temperatures), and allergy/health information relevant to participants.
  • Assist the Food & Nutrition Services Director in maintaining records, preparing reports, and filing claims to comply with Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) requirements.
  • Prepare and serve meals for special functions as directed.
  • Recommend supplies within budget limitations.

Requirements

  • High school education or GED equivalence preferred.
  • Knowledge of, and adherence to, food safety practices and procedures is required.
  • ServSafe certification or ability to obtain certification is required.
  • One to three years of experience cooking in a school, medical, or commercial environment.
  • Experience working with elementary school-aged children and a passion for this environment.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean record.

Skills

  • Commercial (large-scale) cooking experience.
  • Ability to foster confidence, trust, and respect among members, staff, and the public while aligning with the mission of the Alfond Youth & Community Center.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to multi-task and thrive in a fast-paced environment, both independently and as part of a team.
  • Computer competency, including the ability to prepare and produce reports.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and demonstrate critical thinking.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing needs.

Schedule

40 hours per week. Primary hours are Monday through Friday, but the schedule will vary. Weekend work will be required throughout the year.
