Job Description
The Lead Commercial HVAC Service Technician plays a critical role in both field operations and the development of a growing service division. This position combines advanced technical expertise with leadership responsibilities, supporting the buildout of service capabilities while working hands-on in the field.
This individual will lead service execution across the full equipment lifecycle—from startup and warranty support to ongoing maintenance and complex troubleshooting—while mentoring technicians and ensuring an exceptional customer experience. This role also offers a clear path for advancement into a Service Manager position as the department continues to grow.
The office is based in Louisville, Kentucky. Travel to projects around Kentucky and Southern Indiana will be the norm.
This role is all about creating positive experiences — identifying problems, delivering smart solutions, and ensuring every job is completed to the highest standards for both the customer and the company.
You’ll work with industry-leading equipment, including VRF systems, rooftop units, packaged systems, and more.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Technician Leadership – All Technician Leaders will manage a group of specific technicians, assisting with dispatch when needed, reviewing site reports, generating quotes, managing technician quality control.
- Service, Troubleshooting & Optimization – Diagnose and resolve issues on a variety of commercial HVAC systems. Perform preventative maintenance and fine tune system performance for energy efficiency and reliability.
- Customer Relationship Management – Build and maintain strong client relationships by addressing service concerns, recommending improvements, and delivering high-quality communication and support.
- Communication & Documentation – Coordinate with internal teams to ensure efficient scheduling and follow-up. Train & Mentor – Stay up to date through ongoing technical training. Serve as a resource and occasional mentor to junior technicians in the field.
- Safety & Compliance – Follow all safety guidelines and regulatory requirements as outlined by OSHA, the company, and customer sites.
- Other Duties as Assigned – Contribute to the team and company by stepping in where needed.
Additional Role Highlights
- Some overnight travel may be required depending on jobsite location.
- All required PPE is supplied by the company.

Experience and Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years of commercial HVAC service experience with systems such as VRF, rooftop units, and packaged equipment.
- EPA Universal Certification required; OEM-specific training or certifications preferred.
- Skilled in diagnostics, troubleshooting, and interpreting service manuals and schematics.
- Strong communication and customer service skills with a professional, team focused mindset.
- Valid driver’s license with clean driving record.
- Physically capable of lifting heavy equipment, climbing ladders, and working in various field conditions, including rooftops and tight spaces.
- Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation for emergency service coverage.
Physical Demands / Work Environment
- This role is hybrid field-based and office-based and physically active. HVAC Service Technician Leaders can spend periods of physical activity are common while diagnosing equipment at customer job sites.
- While a portion of time (approximately 50%) may be spent in an office setting completing reports or administrative tasks at a computer, many responsibilities require hands-on work with tools and equipment.
- Technicians must regularly lift and move items up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds, sometimes in challenging environments.
- Clear and effective communication with customers, coworkers, and supervisors is essential, both in person and electronically. Individuals must also be capable of reviewing their work for accuracy and making necessary adjustments in the field.
- This position involves frequent exposure to outdoor conditions and varying environments, including mechanical rooms, rooftops, and active construction sites. Noise levels may range from low to high depending on the job location.
