Job Summary
Responsibilities
- Performs and/or assists in performing various Flow cytometry testing including (but not limited to) lymphocyte subsets, CD34 counts and leukemia/lymphoma analysis in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures.
- Receives processes, labels and pipettes controls and reagents in accordance with established procedures; completes all documentation and logs information in accordance with set procedures in the laboratory information system.
- Maintains inventory records; monitors wastage and discards expired material.
- Trains and performs competency assessment on other Flow cytometry technologists.
- Maintains departmental quality, files, statistics, equipment and inventory.
- Troubleshoots routine equipment problems or seeks technical assistance, keeping Supervisor(s) informed; Logs scheduled and unscheduled instrument service; Identifies trends and advises Manager on new equipment and service acquisition.
- Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory; Reports test results in a timely manner.
- Fulfills established procedures for laboratory quality control, ensures regulatory compliance; documents remedial action taken for detected deficiencies and defects.
- Plans work and completes job responsibilities in an efficient and productive manner.
- Completes tasks using computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, e-mail, Laboratory information system and another database software.
- Confers with attending or referral physician on test results and ensures their immediate notification when the critical limits of specified test results are exceeded.
- Provides technical assistance in the development of procedures and feasibility studies in setting up new procedures.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Four years of experience as a NYS licensed Laboratory Technologist required, experience in Flow cytometry in an approved medical hospital or public health laboratory, preferred.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology (or equivalent experience).
- New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist licensure from the New York Education Department required.
- Keeps abreast of developments of new techniques or improvements in published or existing methods.
- Maintains continuing education and attends seminars, workshops, conferences and meetings.
- Basic knowledge of laboratory information systems.
- Ability to organize tasks and projects work without close supervision to complete tasks.
