About the role
Under the direction of the Camp Program Director / Site Director, the Lead Camp Program Instructor will direct program staff in the set-up, execution, and clean-up of camp activities according to the written program plan. This includes close adherence to the written program schedule, complete familiarization with instructions for assigned program activity, and leading camp activities in the role of coach and referee while ensuring a safe environment for the program. The Lead Camp Program Instructor will refer participant behavioral management issues and parent communication to the Camp Counselor and direct supervisor.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain personal relationships that inspire trust and support positive connections to the program, branch, and mission of the YMCA.
- Hold staff and volunteers accountable for following program procedures and policies.
- Assist and guide staff to support positive behavior management as well as staff and child relationships.
- Report any issue or concerns immediately to the direct supervisor.
- Implement and lead quality camp programs according to written program plans and schedule while maintaining all standards set by KDHE and YMCA.
- Provide information for the camp activity calendar and/or content for camp social media, as requested.
- Be actively engaged with campers, fellow staff members, and program activities throughout the session to build relationships with youth and be a role model for all.
- Maintain behavior documentation as needed and communicate challenges to the direct supervisor when issues impact safety or the quality of the camp program.
- Supervise proper organization, maintenance, and inventory of all program equipment and supplies.
- Review all emergency and/or medical plans and special needs plans for individual campers; ensure reasonable accommodations and additional steps are taken to adjust the program for inclusion while maintaining the safety of all youth and follow up with the direct supervisor as needed.
- Apply program policies and procedures respectfully and firmly when responding to campers, staff, and other camp guests.
- Make every effort to help participants find success when encountering difficult situations, concerns, or challenges.
- Respond quickly and effectively to accidents and incidents while following YMCA and KDHE reporting policies and submit all required documentation in a timely manner.
- Provide supply requests to the direct supervisor in a timely manner.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
