The Portfolio Analytics team will be free from the corporate financial calendar, aligned to regional business priorities, and supporting underwriting decision-making when most needed. The team will be comprised of analytics professionals with a wide range of technical skillsets, including actuaries, data scientists, implementation engineers, data engineers, and data visualization developers.
We envision a dynamic, underwriter-centered function that treats underwriters and regional leaders as its core customers—identifying trends early, delivering actionable insights built on reliable data, and embedding actuarial and predictive models into daily workflows.
In the Lead Business Intelligence Engineer role, you will lead a team that builds reporting tools and automations providing real-time insight to support high-stakes decision-making. This position is responsible for creating high-quality reports and dashboards that allow Markel associates to effectively monitor their portfolio of business and key performance indicators (KPIs), as both a leader and a hands-on contributor. You will work closely with a team of data scientists, engineers, and analysts to enable the modernization and scalability of insights.
Responsibilities
- Lead Power BI Strategy & Design: Own the overall Power BI solution architecture and design principles for the team, ensuring reports and dashboards deliver strategic insights and actionable results for business stakeholders.
- Team Leadership: Lead a small team of Power BI developers, providing clear direction, prioritizing workloads, delegating tasks, and fostering a collaborative environment.
- Strategic Prioritization: Actively engage with business leaders and project stakeholders to understand business objectives, translate them into actionable data & analytics initiatives, and prioritize the team's workload.
- Technical Expertise: Maintain deep expertise in the latest Power BI features, tools, and best practices, and share this knowledge with the team. Ensure solutions leverage advanced functionalities and performance optimization techniques.
- Mentorship & Development: Mentor and coach team members on Power BI development, data modeling, SQL optimization, and effective communication of data insights.
- Collaboration w/ Data Engineering: Work closely with data engineering and IT teams to ensure requirements and dependencies for refined data are clearly communicated and delivered, enabling accurate and reliable reporting and analytics.
- Process Improvement: Proactively identify opportunities for process improvements, implement best practices, and establish robust testing and documentation standards.
- Stakeholder Management: Effectively communicate features, capabilities, and progress to stakeholders at all levels.
- Data Analysis & Modeling: Deeply understand Markel Specialty's data & analytics solutions to inform strategic decisions. Work with large data sets to identify trends and develop actionable solutions that support insurance product strategic priorities.
- Quality Assurance: Define and enforce quality standards for deliverables, including functionality testing, performance testing, and user acceptance criteria.
- Project Leadership: Contribute to the analysis and discussion of project work with leaders, peers, project management, and customer engagement.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
- 6-8 years of relevant experience working with Business Intelligence technologies.
- Deep, demonstrable expertise with Power BI, including visualization design, data modeling, DAX proficiency, and understanding of administrative functions.
- 4-8 years of hands-on data modeling experience in an enterprise environment.
- Proficiency in understanding relational databases and SQL development.
- Proven experience leading and/or mentoring junior to mid-level technical staff, with a strong understanding of prioritization and delegation.
- Knowledge and experience with other coding languages such as Python.
- Experience with the Microsoft Azure cloud.
- Experience with Databricks.
- Foundational knowledge of the insurance industry or a related financial services industry.
- Experience with Azure DevOps for project management and deployment.
- Experience with other tools in the Microsoft Power Platform, such as Power Apps, Power Automate, and Pages.

Pay
The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, licensure, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The national salary range for the Lead Business Intelligence Engineer position is $116,080-$145,000 with a 25% bonus potential.
