CAMBA Legal Services, Inc. (CLS) is the legal services arm of CAMBA, Inc. CLS provides free civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers in the areas of consumer law, foreclosure prevention, immigration, housing law, and domestic violence assistance. In addition to providing direct representation and legal advice to thousands of clients, CAMBA attorneys engage in legislative advocacy, impact litigation, community education, and expert training.

CAMBA Legal Services – Housing provides anti-eviction legal services to tenants, including advice and full representation in nonpayment and holdover proceedings, HP actions for repairs, HCR overcharge complaints, administrative hearings (NYCHA and HPD), Article 78 proceedings, and other related matters. Prospective clients must meet income eligibility guidelines (below the self-sufficiency standard).

Responsibilities

  • Represent clients in court and before quasi-judicial or administrative agencies.
  • Conduct client intake and assessment of client needs.
  • Provide advice and counsel in Housing matters.
  • Interview clients and witnesses in preparation for litigation and/or court proceedings.
  • Prepare legal documents, conduct legal research, negotiate payouts, etc. in housing cases.
  • Advise clients of their rights, laws, rulings, and regulations applicable to their cases.
  • Gather evidence to formulate defense or to institute legal action on clients’ behalf.
  • Develop legal strategies, arguments, and testimonies in preparation for trials, hearings, and oral arguments.
  • File motions, briefs, pleadings, legal memos, and appeals with the court.
  • Research and interpret laws, rulings, and regulations as they relate to clients' cases.
  • Coordinate follow-up advocacy with lenders, agencies providing financial assistance, and other relevant parties.
  • Ensure paralegals conduct proper follow-up with all aspects of cases (e.g., proper filing and service of court documents, follow-up with administrative and social agencies).
  • Coordinate with other attorneys to ensure case intake and management.
  • Provide legal seminars and workshops for various community groups.
  • Attend appropriate professional development and training sessions.
  • Provide all required information for weekly/monthly/quarterly/annual reports.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive client files including up-to-date case notes.
  • Participate in and coordinate with other housing, foreclosure prevention, and consumer law units.
  • Record all court dates in the shared court calendar.
  • Assist with billing cases, including completing billable hour forms and corresponding affidavits.
  • Assist new attorneys with housing court cases.
  • Research and analyze legal sources, including statutes, recorded judicial decisions, legal articles, and codes.
  • Conduct community and client outreach.
  • Deliver or direct the delivery of subpoenas to witnesses and parties to an action.
  • Follow up with clients and other organizations regarding clients’ progress toward their legal goals.
  • Recommend and implement strategies to encourage and support clients’ full participation in their legal matters.
  • Represent clients in Housing Court and administrative hearings before agencies such as OTDA, NYCHA Section 8, DHCR, and others.
  • Advocate on behalf of clients when applications or benefits are denied, including preparing advocacy letters and other necessary documentation.

Tasks may be modified, expanded, and/or assigned over time.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) + Licensed to practice law in New York State.
  • Knowledge of, and experience in, civil litigation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to public interest law.
  • Prior experience working with vulnerable populations.
  • Excellent written & verbal communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Strong computer literacy in other Microsoft Office Suite applications.

Pay

$86,520 annually.

When salary ranges are listed, the range would represent the low and high end for the applicable position & program. The salary offered would be based on various factors unique to each program and candidate, including but not limited to experience, education, budget and/or program size, internal equity, skills, and other factors that may be required for the position and organization.

Schedule

Full-time (35 hours per week).
