About the role

The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City is seeking a self-motivated, versatile Federal Reserve Law Enforcement Sergeant (FRLEO) to serve as a technical and operational leader for law enforcement staff during shift operations. While this position does not have direct reports, the Sergeant provides guidance, mentorship, and tactical direction to officers. Internal candidates should anticipate an October 2026 start date, while external candidates will begin in January 2027 when academy training commences.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate law enforcement staff performing security duties including post assignments, patrol, access control, screening, surveillance, and special assignments.
  • Serve as a liaison between management and operational staff, facilitating effective communication in both directions.
  • Protect and safeguard personnel, property, assets, and operations; remain alert for potential security, property, or safety concerns and initiate appropriate actions.
  • Respond to disturbances and unusual, emergency, or rapidly evolving situations, including potentially life-threatening scenarios; use appropriate physical force and/or weaponry as dictated by the situation and make critical decisions prior to the arrival of senior officers.
  • Prepare detailed incident reports.
  • Operate and monitor Bank Law Enforcement and life safety systems and equipment, including closed-circuit television, integrated access control and alarm systems, X-ray machines, metal detectors, biometric readers, radio systems, fire systems, public address systems, and fire extinguishers.
  • Perform rotational roles such as Canine Handler, Instructor, or Field Training Officer.
  • Train, delegate, and review the work of less experienced staff.
  • Lead teams of FRLEOs to support operations and provide direction for the Law Enforcement Unit.
  • Facilitate and provide general oversight for the day-to-day activities of the Law Enforcement Department.
  • In the absence of a supervisor, assume responsibility for and lead shift operations or specialized areas.
  • Ensure FRLEOs are properly equipped, trained, and fulfilling their duties in compliance with organizational policies.
  • Complete required department reports, review reports prepared by FRLEOs, and provide administrative assistance to supervision.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Typically requires at least 5 years of relevant experience.
  • High school education or GED.
  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Master understanding of business processes and subject matter; depth and/or breadth of expertise with highly skilled performance.
  • Ability to perform work independently.
  • Excellent oral and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to write clear, concise, and grammatically correct documents.
  • Working knowledge of PCs, email, and ability to learn other computer-based/MS Office applications.

Schedule

  • Fully onsite in Kansas City, MO; not remote-eligible.
  • Availability to work 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts, including shift changes/rotations based on department needs.
  • Requires overtime work, including unscheduled overtime due to staffing shortages or operational necessity (e.g., heightened Law Enforcement alerts).
  • Requires working holidays and weekends.

Pay

The starting pay range for this position is $62,500–$81,000. Final offers are determined by factors including the candidate’s qualifications, internal alignment considerations, district assignment, and geographic location.

Screening Requirements

  • Contingent upon successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation, psychological examination, agility, physical, and drug screening, as well as the ability to lawfully carry a firearm. Screenings are initiated at the time of offer acceptance and must be completed prior to the start date.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of ongoing training and supplemental screenings, including:
    • Basic Law Enforcement Training Course (BLEC).
    • New Officer Field Training Program (FTO).
    • In-service law enforcement training.
    • Weapons qualifications.
    • Annual drug screening.
    • Background reinvestigations.
    • Successfully maintaining Federal Reserve Law Enforcement Officer certification requirements.
  • Background investigations and drug testing are required for all new hires as a condition of employment after the job offer is made.
  • Subject to FBI fingerprint and criminal background check, Patriot Act/Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) watch list check, employment and education verification, and NCIC check. Additional screenings may be required based on the sensitive nature of information accessed.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

Sponsorship

The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City will not sponsor a new applicant for employment authorization for this position. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States without the need for visa sponsorship now or in the future.
