About the role

This position pilots State-owned/leased single-engine reciprocating and turbine helicopters in support of law enforcement, Search and Rescues (SAR), and other missions as directed.

Responsibilities

  • Assigns work, evaluates performance, ensures staffing levels are appropriate and coordinates with Aviation Program Manager to ensure goals of the program are being met.
  • Works with other pilots, staff and commissioned members to ensure all flights are accomplished in accordance with federal law and within department policy.
  • Performs duties of flight instruction as a Multi Engine Instructor (MEI), Multi Engine Instrument Instructor (MEII), Light Single-Engine Certified Flight Instructor (CFI), Light Single-Engine Certified Flight Instrument Instructor (CFII), Rotary Wing Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) or Rotary Wing Certified Instrument Instructor (CFII).
  • Provides recurrent flight training to other department pilots on flight status.
  • May be assigned to fly and/or maintain complex aircraft operated by the Aircraft Section.

Requirements

  • Correlation level knowledge of flying maneuvers required for day (required), night, and instrument flying (desired) conditions, skill piloting rotary wing aircraft operated by the department.
  • Rotary wing engine commercial pilot certificates and instrument pilot rating. A total of 1,500 hours flying aircraft which includes 500 hours as Pilot-in-Command (PIC) rotary wing aircraft. Of this required flight time, 500 hours as PIC must be Alaska time (100 hours of which were logged within 12 months prior to employment) or equivalent to those predominantly encountered in the position’s Alaskan areas of operation. 200 hours of rotary wing turbine engine experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of aircraft maintenance procedures in the following area: Perform rotary wing aircraft post-maintenance function checks and coordinate findings with the aircraft maintenance personnel; Provide logistics support with other department pilots in order to move rotary wing aircraft between its based location to one of our maintenance hubs.

Qualifications

  • Current Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Licensure and class of Medical Certification as a Commercial Pilot or Airline Transport Pilot with ratings, including operating under instrument flight rules, appropriate to the category, class, and type of aircraft flown and directed by the position;
  • Applicable hours as Pilot In Command (PIC) of appropriate category and class of aircraft predominantly flown by the position that includes sufficient flying time to safely and effectively operate aircraft in the geography, topography, and weather conditions equivalent to those predominantly encountered in the position’s Alaskan areas of operation.
  • Experience leading and contributing to the operations and maintenance of the staff and aircraft comprising an organization's aviation program and aircraft fleet. The required experience includes, but is not limited to, work such as Aircraft Pilot 1 job class with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
