About the role

We are seeking a self-motivated, versatile Federal Reserve Law Enforcement Officer K-9 Handler (FRLEO) to work with an assigned K-9 partner to protect and safeguard Bank premises, property, personnel, and operations. As a K-9 team, you will respond to incidents on Bank property and provide emergency services and explosive detection capabilities. This role also includes basic police duties such as maintaining a safe environment through continual assessment and mitigation of physical security risks. The FRLEO will assist with the effective deployment of law enforcement best practices and physical security system technologies, including access control, video surveillance, intrusion detection, and screening.

Internal candidates should anticipate an October 2026 start date, while external candidates will begin in January 2027 when academy training commences.

Responsibilities

• Operate as a law enforcement K-9 handler to provide explosives detection screening of all Federal Reserve deliveries, vehicles entering or adjacent to Bank property, sites of special events on Bank property, and routinely patrol Bank property and grounds.
• Respond to special requests for explosive detection based on unusual or suspicious circumstances.
• Maintain proficiency and certification for self and K-9 in explosive detection in accordance with applicable laws and Federal Reserve policy.
• Responsible for all maintenance, care, handling, and training of assigned K-9.
• Maintain knowledge of current trends and technological developments in the K-9 and law enforcement field.
• Protect and safeguard personnel, property, assets, and operations; remain alert for potential security, property, or safety concerns and initiate appropriate actions.
• Respond to disturbances and unusual, emergency, or rapidly evolving situations, including potentially life-threatening scenarios. Use appropriate physical force and/or weaponry as dictated by the situation and make critical decisions prior to the arrival of senior officers.
• Prepare detailed incident reports.
• Control access to the Bank and high-security areas, including inspecting individuals, their property, and/or vehicles.
• Perform interior and exterior security patrols and checks.
• Operate and monitor Bank law enforcement and life safety systems and equipment, including closed-circuit television, integrated access control and alarm systems, X-ray machines, metal detectors, biometric readers, radio systems, fire systems, public address systems, and fire extinguishers.
• May perform rotational roles such as Instructor or Field Training Officer.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Typically requires at least 3 years of K-9 handling experience.
• Documented experience handling an explosive detection dog in an operational environment.
• Prior civilian or military K-9 experience preferred.
• High school education or GED.
• Must be at least 21 years old.
• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
• Excellent oral and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to write clear, concise, and grammatically correct documents.
• Working knowledge of PCs, email, and ability to learn other computer-based/MS Office applications.

Screening Requirements

This position is contingent upon successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation, psychological examination, agility, physical, and drug screening, as well as the ability to lawfully carry a firearm. These screenings will be initiated at the time of offer acceptance and must be successfully completed prior to the position start date. Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of ongoing training and supplemental screenings, including but not limited to:

• Basic Law Enforcement Training Course (BLEC).
• New Officer Field Training Program (FTO).
• In-service law enforcement training.
• Weapons qualifications.
• Annual drug screening.
• Background reinvestigations.
• Successfully maintaining Federal Reserve Law Enforcement Officer certification requirements.

Background investigations and drug testing are required for all new hires as a condition of employment, after the job offer is made. Individuals hired for this role will be subject to an FBI fingerprint and criminal background check, Patriot Act/Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) watch list check, employment and education verification, and NCIC check. Additional screenings may be required based on the sensitive nature of information you will have access to.

Schedule

• Fully onsite in Kansas City, MO.
• First shift.
• Requires overtime work, including unscheduled overtime due to unanticipated staffing shortages or operational necessity (e.g., heightened law enforcement alerts).
• Requires work on holidays and weekends.

Pay

The starting pay range for this position is $54,000 - $80,900. Final offers are determined by factors including the candidate’s qualifications, internal alignment considerations, district assignment, and geographic location.
