About the role

The City of Thornton Police Department seeks a Lateral Police Officer to join our team. This position requires a Colorado POST certification with 2 years of Police patrol experience.

Responsibilities

Under specified supervision, the Lateral Police Officer performs a variety of public safety functions to serve and protect the community and enforce federal, state, and municipal law. Essential functions include: - Providing law enforcement services such as patrolling streets, investigating crimes, assisting with public inquiries, and responding to emergencies. - Writing detailed police reports, collecting physical evidence, and testifying in court. - Offering information, assistance, and direction to the public, emphasizing community policing. - Intervening in disputes, apprehending suspects, making arrests, issuing citations, interviewing witnesses, and maintaining law and order. - Transporting prisoners to detention facilities as needed. - Interacting with other jurisdictions, law enforcement agencies, and courts of law. - Conducting research and completing special projects, such as policy and municipal ordinance development. - Working a varying schedule and/or shift. - Performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education/Experience: - High school diploma or GED. - At least 21 years of age. - At least 2 years of Police patrol experience in Colorado or another state. Licensing/Certification Requirements: - Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (CPOST) certificate required. - Valid Colorado driver's license with a safe driving record. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: - Knowledge of city policies, procedures, and goals. - Knowledge of constitutional rights, Colorado Revised Statutes, Thornton Municipal Code, and Model Traffic Code. - Knowledge of law enforcement principles, practices, and techniques. - Knowledge of the criminal justice system. - Knowledge of appropriate self-defense techniques. - Knowledge of the city's boundaries, streets, neighborhoods, and business areas. - Skill in using standard law enforcement equipment. - Skill in operating assigned police vehicles safely. - Ability to understand and apply ordinances, statutes, laws, and higher court rulings. - Ability to apply police science skills and techniques. - Ability to testify in court. - Ability to protect oneself and others in threatening situations. - Ability to prepare accurate and concise reports. - Ability to learn photography and forensic skills. - Ability to use standard office equipment and computer applications. - Ability to communicate effectively with various audiences. - Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations. - Ability to enforce ordinances, statutes, and laws fairly, firmly, and impartially. Physical and Mental Requirements: - Regularly required to balance, sit, stand, reach, walk, run, stoop, kneel, crouch, push, pull, lift, twist, demonstrate manual dexterity, grasp, talk, hear, and see. - Required to physically restrain combative individuals. - Required to comply with all physical requirements of SCBA and/or any other respiratory protection equipment. - Required to work regular shifts, stay alert during prolonged periods of stationary or repetitive activity, and remain calm during stressful or possibly life-threatening situations.
