Job Summary

Three Corrections Deputy positions are actively recruiting. This notice seeks applicants for the Civil Service Examination for Corrections Deputy positions within the Island County Sheriff's Office. All classified employees/positions within the Sheriff's Office require a Civil Service Examination. Upon opening, the position will be a full-time, sworn (commissioned) position.

About the Role

The Corrections Deputy performs a variety of duties and responsibilities in the Corrections and Detention facility located in Coupeville. Their primary duties include:

  • Receiving, booking, maintaining custody of, escorting, transporting, caring for and overseeing offenders.
  • Maintaining facility security by modeling pro-social behaviors and promoting positive correctional practices.

Responsibilities

Deputy responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with inmate management and supervision.
  • Ensuring the safety and security of the facility and staff.
  • Providing support to inmates through counseling and educational programs.

Requirements

To be considered, applicants must:

  • Have completed the WSCJTC Basic Corrections Academy or an equivalency academy.
  • Have two years of full-time, paid corrections deputy/officer experience in Washington State.
  • Not have more than a 24-month break in service since their last law enforcement employer.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or a lawful permanent resident who can read and write English.
  • Meet minimum weight and height standards.
  • Pass vision tests with uncorrected 20/100 vision, corrected to 20/20.

Qualifications

Applicants must:

  • Have a high school diploma or GED certificate.
  • Be physically and mentally healthy.
  • Be a member of the Corrections Guild.

  • Ability to handle stressful situations calmly and effectively.
  • Knowledge of correctional procedures and policies.
  • Proficiency in computer systems and software.

Application Process

To apply, applicants must:

  • Complete an Island County Application for Employment powered by NEOGOV.
  • Upload a completed Authorization to Release Information form.
  • Upload a cover letter and resume.
  • Upload a completed Personal History Statement (PHS).
  • Include copies of certificates from law enforcement training and a DD Form 214, if applicable.
  • Submit reference letters from current or previous supervisors, current or former coworkers, and personal references.

Civil Service Examination Process

Applicants must satisfactorily pass the Civil Service Examination(s) to be placed on the Lateral Entry Eligibility Register. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Applicants who do not meet qualifications A-C will not be contacted.

Civil Service Eligibility Register

Names of qualified candidates resulting from continuous examinations will be entered on the eligible register. Certifications for appointments will be made in the same manner as from any eligible register.

Civil Service Selection Process

Vacancies will be filled by the Civil Service "rule of five," with the top five eligibles forwarded to the appointing authority (Sheriff) for interview and background investigation. Applicants given a conditional offer of employment are subject to further processes including polygraph examination, psychological examination, medical examination, and background investigation. All appointments are subject to a one-year probationary period.
