This position is located in Huntsville, AL, supporting the [Name of Program].

Responsibilities

  • Provide investigation, understanding, and evaluation of technical issues related to high energy laser system safety for laboratory and test range operations.
  • Provide system and safety engineering expertise to SMDC during the development of Army Laser Weapon technologies and systems during design, fabrication, and testing, including field testing against static and dynamic targets at various military ranges and defining safe laser operations on the test and training ranges.
  • Be part of a government and contractor team developing laser components/subsystems/systems to ensure safe testing and operation, e.g., assisting with HardWare Abort System (HWAS) and Satellite Predictive Avoidance methods.
  • Develop, as part of a team, top-level requirements for a project, e.g., deliver readiness-level 6 Vulnerability Modules to support DT&E testing.
  • Understand the technical and operational significance of project technical objectives.
  • Work with government and contractor engineers and scientists to establish project costs and schedules.
  • Simplify complex technical aspects and features of laser systems for senior government management, e.g., general officers and senior executive service civilians.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, or Systems Engineering with a minimum of 10 years of experience.
  • Understanding of aspects of all laser subsystems (laser source; beam control; power management; thermal management; and battle management/fire control).
  • Self-starter, able to perform assignments with minimal direction, occasionally on short, rigid delivery schedules.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work with mid- to upper-level government managers with a high degree of professionalism.
  • Highly skilled in MATLAB and Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, and Project.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and have the ability to obtain/maintain a DoD security clearance.
  • Must be able to travel up to 15% of the time.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with solid state laser systems/subsystems is desired.
