About the Role

The CNC Laser Operator is responsible for operating a Trumpf laser cutting machine to meet specifications and production requirements by following engineering documents and shop travelers. This position focuses on getting the job done right the first time by emphasizing quality of workmanship, accountability, safety, and teamwork.

Responsibilities

General Responsibilities

  • Support all continuous improvements in safety, quality, 5S, and existing manufacturing processes.
  • Provide feedback to leadership to help resolve quality issues or operational improvements regarding productivity and procedural changes.
  • Ensure the machine is always running and communicate any issues that prevent product flow.
  • Know and abide by all company rules and policies regarding safety and conduct, including the use and maintenance of company-provided PPE.
  • Embrace the cross-training culture by learning other jobs or tasks within the facility.
  • Perform daily housekeeping to ensure the work area is clean and organized.
  • Flexible schedule required for overtime and start times based on work volumes.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Operate the CNC laser cutting machine and other machinery used in the production process.
  • Select and set up lenses/nozzles based on material type and thickness.
  • Load programs and set machine parameters to ensure optimal performance.
  • Perform routine daily maintenance, such as working on the cutting unit, including removing and cleaning the protective lens and centering the beam to nozzle.
  • Pull sheet metal material when needed, using powered equipment.
  • Arrange and load sheet metal material onto the laser bed or automation.
  • Produce parts utilizing the ‘top down’ production list.
  • Troubleshoot during production runs to identify and correct problems by performing LensLine, Spot Image, Tape Shot, and Focus Comb tests.
  • Check dimensions such as gauge, height, width, holes, and cut-outs against engineering documents and shop travelers.
  • Monitor fill level of bulk tank system and report reordering levels to the Team Lead.

Requirements

  • Understand and enforce laser safety rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of CNC laser machine operation, including startup and shutdown procedures.
  • TruTops or SigmaNEST operating experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with 2D, 3D models, and DFX Files.
  • Understand and control elements on the human machine interface (HMI).
  • Knowledge of tooling and tool maintenance.
  • Proven measurement (tape measure, caliper) and mathematical conversion skills.
  • Ability to distinguish material types and gauges.
  • Understanding of 5S, lean manufacturing, and standard operating procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and shop travelers.
  • Highly organized with sharp attention to detail and ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively with others in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication skills for routine and unplanned circumstances with engineering, Team Leads, and shop personnel.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 2+ years of experience on Trumpf, Amada, or similar CNC Laser Cutting Machines.
  • Demonstrated strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Metalworking / Hollow Metal fabrication experience preferred.
  • Dexterous with manufacturing equipment, basic power tools, and machinery.

Physical Demands

  • Requires lifting, pushing, pulling, and grasping up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Dexterity with both hands.
  • Occasionally work in a bended, kneeled, stooped, or squatted position.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.

Work Environment

  • Fast-paced custom metal manufacturing environment.
  • High noise levels.
  • Contact with metals and lubricants.
  • Exposure to moving objects such as machinery, mechanical parts, forklifts, and carts.
  • Exposure to hot or cold temperatures in areas of the building that cannot be temperature controlled (especially during summer months).

Pay

The expected base hourly range is $20 - $22.00 per hour. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience and other factors permitted by law.
