Language Interpreter / Translator

Pay Rate: $18.56 per hour
Independent Contractor / 1099

Responsibilities

• Listen to, understand, and interpret/translate spoken or written statements from other languages (as identified by student population) to English.
• Reproduce statements in other languages (as identified by student population) or English for unique listening or reading audiences.
• Facilitate and manage an interpreting and translation request system to support district and school needs.
• Facilitate effective communication between parties that do not speak the same language by converting spoken or written language.
• Attend conferences and meetings as an official interpreter to mediate discussions.
• Translate between English and other languages (as identified by student population) for district families.
• Relay concepts and ideas accurately between languages.
• Convert written materials (e.g., books, publications, web pages, letters) from other languages into English or vice versa.
• Create new texts in the target language that reproduce the content and style of the original.
• Manage translation and interpreting requests, scheduling appropriate service providers based on language needs.
• Receive and submit assignments electronically.
• Employ computer-assisted translation tools.
• Immediately inform supervisor of sensitive and/or reportable interpreting issues.
• Read aloud documents written in a language other than the original.
• Provide language services to students, staff, and families with limited English proficiency.
• Translate educational materials and informational brochures issued by schools and district offices into another language.
• Accompany non-English speaking visitors and facilitate communication between them and the receiving party.
• Work collaboratively with diverse groups of people.
• Encourage families to participate in school affairs and promote school involvement.

Requirements

• Must be able to interpret/translate from and to English.
• Fluency in one or more of the following languages (preferred): Albanian, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin and/or Cantonese), Russian, Spanish, Tajik, Turkish, Ukrainian, Uzbek.
• Required clearances: PA Child Abuse, PA Criminal History, FBI Fingerprints (obtainable during onboarding; must be no more than twelve months old at time of hire).

Qualifications

• High School Diploma.
• 1 year of experience working with multicultural clientele.
