About the role

This is a full-time, FLSA non-exempt position with Carson City Public Works located in Carson City, Nevada. Under immediate supervision, provides a variety of landfill maintenance and operations duties required for efficient and effective service to landfill customers and the City.

Responsibilities

  • Operates heavy equipment necessary for landfill operations; maintains equipment in a clean and functional operating condition.
  • Operates water truck to perform dust control and fire suppression activities as required.
  • Operates gatehouse; utilizes automated scale system; calculates and collects amount due for waste loads.
  • Directs vehicle traffic at the landfill.
  • Maintains landfill shop, catch fences, and buildings.
  • Performs snow removal as required.
  • Performs basic clean-up of site and facilities as required.
  • Enters and retrieves data and prepares reports using a computer; reviews such reports for accuracy and makes corrections as required; operates standard office equipment.
  • Observes safe working practices, including maintaining work areas in a safe condition.
  • Uses standard office equipment, including a computer, in the course of the work.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as a member of a work team.
  • Keeps basic records of work performed, time sheets, etc.
  • Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with the public and City staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.

    Requirements

    • High school diploma or GED
    • Two (2) years of heavy equipment operation experience
    • Valid Class A driver's license with tanker endorsement within 18 months of hire

    Qualifications

    • Education and Work Experience: High school diploma or GED; AND two (2) years of heavy equipment operation experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.

    Supervision

    Under immediate supervision - Incumbents at this level are closely supervised in essentially all aspects of their assigned work with the exception of routine and basic tasks. Work methods are generally prescribed in specific terms. They usually follow an established routine with general assignments, and their work is subject to frequent reviews. A position may involve repetition of a limited number of tasks that after initial training and review warrant only occasional supervisory review.

    Physical Demands & Working Environment

    • Mobility to work in a field setting, use standard office equipment and stamina to sit and walk for extended periods of time.
    • Agility to navigate uneven terrain.
    • Strength to lift and carry up to 80 pounds.
    • Work at height up to seventy-five (75) feet.
    • Vision to read printed materials.
    • Hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.
    • Work is subject to exposure to weather conditions, fumes, dust and hazardous chemicals.

    Conditions of Employment

    • All new employees will serve a probationary period of twelve (12) months. Such employees are not subject to the collective bargaining agreement and may be laid off or discharged during this period for any reason.
    • Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.
    • Any City employee may be required to stay at or return to work during emergencies to perform duties specific to this classification or to perform other duties as requested in an assigned response position.
    • This may require working a non-traditional work schedule or working outside normal assigned duties during the incident and/or emergency.
    • New employees are required to submit to a fingerprint based background investigation which cost the new employee $47.00 and a drug screen which costs $84.00.
    • Employment is contingent upon passing the background and the drug screen.
    • Carson City participates in E-Verify and will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each applicant's Form I-9 to confirm work authorization.

    • This position is covered under the authority of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Act (FMCSA).
    • All employees covered by this job description are subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the requirements of the FMCSA, as set forth in 49 CFR part 382 as amended; and the Carson City FMCSA Anti-Drug & Alcohol Misuse Prevention Program; which are hereby referenced and made part of the job description and mandates urine testing and breath alcohol testing for safety-sensitive and commercial driver's license positions.
    • A violation of the policy and/or law may result in immediate termination of employment.
    • The US Department of Transportation (DOT) also imposes 49 CFR part 40 as amended, which is hereby referenced and made part of this job description, that establishes standards for collection and testing of urine and breath specimens.
