Landfill Operator/Laborer
About the role
This non-union position performs tasks involving physical labor, basic cleanup and maintenance, and operation of equipment at our Landfill in Duluth, MN. In addition, this position picks and screens unacceptable waste and recyclables, helps direct landfill traffic flow, and helps with baling of cardboard, plastics, and aluminum for recycling. Also aids with lawn care, grounds maintenance, and snow removal as needed.
Responsibilities
- Operates landfill equipment as necessary. Equipment includes but is not limited to dozer, compactor, water truck, skid steer, backhoe.
- Performs general maintenance on landfill equipment.
- Screens loads for unacceptable waste and valuable recyclables.
- Directs landfill traffic to ensure safe delivery of waste into the landfill.
- Screens and sorts load dumps in the transfer station building.
- Picks up windblown debris/litter generated from facility operations.
- Provides backup assistance with operation of the weigh scale.
- Aids with lawn care maintenance activities and general grounds maintenance.
- Aids the Landfill Manager with other facets of landfill operation as requested.
- Follows company and OSHA safety procedures.
- Briefs problems to the Landfill Manager or Safety Director.
- Fulfills daily procedures and protocols as set forth in job orientations and trainings.
- Keeps supervisor informed of known actions, written or verbal, which may affect the ability to successfully perform tasks at Transfer Station or adversely affect Company operations.
- Assists customers with transactions.
- Completes other projects or duties as assigned by management.
Requirements
- Six to twelve months of construction or related experience.
- Basic knowledge and ability to work with equipment, materials, and supplies found in construction work.
- Ability to view and abide by safety training video. Ability to follow proper use and safety guidelines.
- Willingness and ability to perform manual work.
- Demonstrated knowledge of safety precautions and procedures.
- Good communication skills both oral and written when working with all levels of management and employees, external vendors and other business associates.
- Ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions.
- Must have good interpersonal skills.
- Basic mathematic skills. Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency as required by management and/or project requirements.
- High School Diploma or GED is preferred but not required.
- OSHA 10 is preferred but not required.
- First Aid/CPR is preferred but not required.
- Type III Landfill Certification is preferred but not required.
Qualifications
- Must be able to pass a background check.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
Skills
- Physical strength and endurance to perform manual labor.
- Attention to detail for sorting and screening waste.
- Manual dexterity for operating various pieces of equipment.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.

Pay
Base Compensation: 23-28 dollars an hour based on experience. The base salary range may vary depending on geographic location, applicant skills, and prior relevant experience.
Schedule
Extended hours (up to 12 per day) during peak periods are often required.
