Landfill Environmental Technician

About the Role

The Landfill Environmental Technician performs environmental monitoring of water, leachate, and gas systems. The role applies environmental and engineering principles to modify, test, regulate, and operate equipment and systems used in gas systems, leachate collection, and groundwater testing to ensure daily operations meet federal and state guidelines.

Responsibilities

• Performs maintenance and repairs of landfill equipment and control systems to ensure safe and efficient operations.
• Completes daily reports on equipment readings, data collection interpretation, and field observations to document compliance with federal and state rules and regulations.
• Performs routine sampling and analysis of environmental conditions at the landfill and takes corrective action when samples don’t comply with expected operating conditions.
• Develops a thorough understanding of applicable state (NY, VT, NH, ME, MA, PA) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) rules and regulations related to landfill operations.
• Performs repairs and preventative maintenance on gas and leachate collection equipment to improve equipment reliability and avoid unplanned maintenance.
• Participates in regular health and safety meetings to ensure compliance with regulations by on-site staff.
• Engages in training and learning opportunities to expand knowledge of company products, services, and systems.
• Performs other duties as needed to support the company’s vision, mission, and core values.

Career Path

• Level I: 0–2 years of experience. Basic knowledge of landfill systems, diagnosis and repair of irregularities, and understanding of SCADA systems, transducers, and variable frequency drives (VFD).
• Level II: 2–4 years of experience. Solid understanding of system diagnosis and repair, ability to manage system operations, and collaboration in designing new systems and implementing preventative maintenance plans.
• Level III: 4–6 years of experience. Advanced understanding of system diagnosis and repair, ability to manage operations and make repairs, and working knowledge of engineering concepts for gas systems, headers, and laterals. Pursuing a degree in Environmental Science, Geological Sciences, or related field.
• Senior: 6+ years of experience. Expert-level understanding of collection systems, diagnosis, and repair. Assists in training and mentoring junior technicians and communicates effectively with management. Holds a degree in Environmental Science, Geological Sciences, or equivalent experience.

Requirements

• High School or Technical School education.
• Minimum of 1 year of experience working on energy recovery systems or similar equipment.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
• Valid driver’s license and physical ability to lift up to 75 lbs occasionally and stand for up to 8 hours a day.
• Ability to work under varying weather conditions.
• Commitment to workplace safety, sustainability, and environmental compliance.
• Strong mechanical aptitude (SCADA, VFD, Transducer Systems).
• Excellent verbal, written, and communication skills with high attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Geological Sciences, or related field.
