Laborer - Paving
About the Role
The Paving Laborer at Martin Marietta is a vital member of the production and field operations team. This role involves a combination of manual labor and equipment-assisted tasks to support the installation, repair, and maintenance of asphalt surfaces—including highways, parking lots, and industrial sites. Responsibilities
- Assist with the manual distribution, raking, and luting of hot-mix asphalt to ensure a smooth, even grade before compaction.
- Shovel excess asphalt, gravel, or stone; fill trenches and ditches; and clear debris from the paving path to ensure a seamless finish.
- Support the crew in patching asphalt surfaces with hot or cold mix, ensuring joints are matched and finished to plan specifications.
- Set up and move traffic control devices (cones, barricades, signs) and function as a flagger/spotter to ensure the safety of the crew and the public.
- Assist in the backing of trucks and the dumping of materials into the paver, using hand signals to communicate with drivers and operators.
- Maintain a clean and organized work site, yard, or plant, including sweeping roadways, curbs, and gutters, as well as cleaning hand tools and power equipment.
- Proactively identify and remove potential hazards, such as spilled material or debris, from work areas and beneath plant machinery.
- Utilize a variety of hand and power tools, including shovels, rakes, hand tamps, pneumatic drills, and saws, ensuring all tools are cleaned and stored properly after use.
- Assist Plant and Equipment Operators with daily tasks, including the greasing and lubrication of machinery and performing pre-shift safety inspections.
- Demonstrate a willingness to learn the operation of heavy equipment, such as skid steers, backhoes, and rollers, to provide backup support for the crew.
- Perform basic maintenance on company structures, including painting, repairing fences/guardrails, and mowing grass in service yards.
Requirements
- High school diploma, GED, or relevant experience.
- Class C driver’s license.
- 1+ years of experience in asphalt, paving, or construction.
Skills
- Production equipment operation.
- Mechanical aptitude.
- Troubleshooting.
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations and compliance.
- Time management.
Physical Requirements
- Regularly lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing between 50 and 75 lbs.
- Stand, walk, climb, kneel, and bend for extended periods.
- Frequently walk on uneven ground and climb ladders or stairs up to 90 feet for certain plant-related tasks.
- Frequent use of hands and arms for high-repetition tasks.
- Good depth perception and peripheral vision for safety when working near heavy moving equipment.
Working Conditions
- All duties are performed outside in all weather conditions (cold, wet, dry, and dusty).
- Must be able to work in areas where noise levels are up to 85 dBs.
Pay
The hiring range for this position is $24–$28 per hour, exclusive of benefits or bonuses. The offered base compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, business need, market conditions, proficiencies, skills, education, and experience. Additionally, internal pay equity will be considered for similarly situated roles and team members.
