About the role

This position is responsible for scheduling and completing maintenance tasks in a timely and safe manner with quality. The employee works under the direction of the foreperson and may receive direction from the Superintendent or Department Director. The role is subject to emergency call-outs during off-hours and weekends, and the person is expected to be available for such call-outs.

Responsibilities

  • Performs roads and bridge maintenance.
  • Operates equipment and has basic carpentry and masonry experience.
  • Applies knowledge of PennDot publications regarding work zone traffic control.
  • Conducts snow and ice removal, including operating plows.
  • Determines the type of sign needed and gathers required materials from the sign manual.
  • Communicates with crew chief, foreman, and administrator.

Requirements

  • 10 years of construction/structural road and bridge experience.
  • Knowledge of all county-owned roads and bridges.
  • Knowledgeable with herbicides, pesticides, and landscaping maintenance.
  • Knowledgeable with winter road treatments.
  • Familiarity with PennDot sign manual and PennDot Manuals 203 & 408.
  • Understanding of construction and maintenance procedures.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to read architectural/design plans.
  • Valid Pennsylvania Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class A or B.

Physical demands

  • Ability to walk on uneven terrain.
  • Shoveling, raking, lifting rocks, dirt, asphalt, and stone in excess of 50 lbs for 50% of the day.
  • Flagging (standing) for 20% of the day; may exceed 20% depending on the project.
  • Ability to work in all types of climates and temperatures.
  • Ability to shovel and withstand heavy lifting.
  • Ability to use backhoe, air compressors, and jackhammer.
  • Ability to climb, bend, squat, stoop, and kneel for various amounts of time during an 8-hour day.
  • Ability to handle all safety equipment.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk, and hear.
  • Frequently required to taste or smell.
  • Occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands or arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Required vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and depth perception.

Work environment

  • Ability to work in all types of climates and temperatures.
  • Exposure to dangerous conditions.
  • Moderate to loud noise levels in the work environment.
