This position encompasses the scopes of practice of clinical laboratory technologists, cytotechnologists, and histotechnologists, ensuring the delivery of patient-centered, cost-effective, quality care and a culture of safety across laboratory services.

Responsibilities

  • Provides oversight for departmental activities and manages all technical and service activities of the laboratory.
  • Collaborates with the Administrator of Laboratory Services to advance laboratory programs, set objectives, and define operational and financial performance goals.
  • Interacts with regulatory bodies and ensures compliance with inspection outcomes.
  • Develops uniform internal policies, procedures, and standardized testing methodologies by evaluating workflow, new instrumentation, and staffing.
  • Directs and coordinates interface between hospital information systems and laboratory instrumentation.
  • Establishes staffing allocations, assignments, and work schedules within laboratory disciplines (e.g., Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Pathology, Accessioning, Phlebotomy, Blood Bank, and Serology).
  • Collaborates on quality, compliance, and performance improvement initiatives to ensure delivery of quality, patient-centered care and results.
  • Assumes responsibilities of the Administrator of Laboratory Services in their absence.

Requirements

  • Licensed as a clinical laboratory technologist by the NYSED.
  • Meets one of the qualification requirements of a laboratory supervisor as outlined in Title 10, Section 58-1.4 of the New York Public Health Law.
  • Two years of experience overseeing laboratory operations, creating and establishing laboratory programs, and reviewing and interpreting safety data in a hospital or healthcare setting.
  • Successful completion of NYC Health + Hospitals’ Supervisor Development Program within three months of appointment or promotion.

Qualifying experience is not limited to New York State. Candidates licensed or permitted as cytotechnologists or histotechnologists may only supervise work in disciplines appropriate to their license. Clinical laboratory technologists may supervise work in all laboratory disciplines.
