Duties & Responsibilities
- Purpose of Position: Supervises, directs, trains, assigns work to, establishes schedules for work completion, and reviews and evaluates work performance of personnel in a large laboratory or more than one small laboratory, performing tests and complex procedures in laboratory specialties and subspecialties.
- At a higher level, performs the typical tasks of Assignment Level I, II, and III, including but not limited to:
- Performing routine clinical laboratory tests and procedures for diagnosis and treatment on specimens submitted to the laboratory;
- Operates and maintains laboratory equipment, and performs quality control procedures;
- Participates in internal and external programs of quality control and proficiency testing;
- Prepares packages, labels, standardizes laboratory media, reagents, and controls to ensure that the laboratory is adequately supplied;
- Prepares reports, makes entries on charts, and maintains data and other records on a daily, weekly or monthly basis;
- May oversee, monitor, and/or review the work of subordinate personnel.
Minimum Qualifications
- Valid license as a clinical laboratory technologist, cytotechnologist, or histotechnologist issued by the NYSED.
- For Appointment to Levels IV and V: In addition to meeting the qualification requirement of Assignment Level II, candidates must also meet one of the qualification requirements of a laboratory supervisor as outlined in Title 10, Section 58-1.4 of the New York Public Health Law.
Special Notes
Qualifying experience is not limited to New York State. Candidates that are solely licensed or issued permits to practice as cytotechnologists or histotechnologists may only be assigned work, including supervising personnel performing laboratory work, in a laboratory discipline/specialty appropriate to their license or permit. Candidates that are licensed or hold permits to practice as clinical laboratory technologists may be assigned work, including supervising personnel performing laboratory work, in all laboratory disciplines/specialties.
