Laboratory Technologist - Level III

About the Role

Elmhurst Hospital Center (EHC), the major tertiary care provider in Queens, is seeking a licensed clinical laboratory technologist, cytotechnologist, or histotechnologist to join our team. EHC is a 545-bed hospital, serving as a Level I Trauma Center, Emergency Heart Care Station, and 911 Receiving Hospital. We are a premiere healthcare organization in key areas such as Surgery, Cardiology, Women's Health, Pediatrics, Rehabilitation Medicine, Renal, and Mental Health Services.

Responsibilities

This position encompasses the scopes of practice of clinical laboratory technologists, cytotechnologists, and histotechnologists, in accordance with New York State regulations. The role involves performing clinical laboratory work of varying difficulty and supervising a major program initiative or activity. Specific duties include:

• Performing routine and complex clinical laboratory tests and analyses
• Entering raw data from instruments into a computer to determine final results
• Processing specimens, isolating and identifying microorganisms, and preparing slides and smears
• Operating and maintaining laboratory equipment, and performing quality control procedures
• Participating in internal and external quality control and proficiency testing programs
• Preparing, packaging, labeling, and standardizing laboratory media, reagents, and controls
• Maintaining laboratory records and preparing reports
• Supervising, training, and evaluating the work performance of subordinate personnel
• Assisting in developing and revising laboratory policies and procedures
• Conducting complex analyses and designing charts, logs, and records
• Testifying in court or other proceedings as an expert witness

Requirements

• Valid license as a clinical laboratory technologist, cytotechnologist, or histotechnologist issued by the New York State Education Department (NYSED)
• One (1) year of full-time paid experience as a technologist in a clinical laboratory or blood bank (for Level III positions)

Qualifications

• Ability to work independently with broad latitude for judgment and decision-making
• Experience in maintaining quality control and assurance programs
• Skill in advising staff on appropriate methods and techniques
• Proficiency in overseeing laboratory supply and equipment maintenance
• Knowledge of preparing and standardizing laboratory media, reagents, and controls

• Qualifying experience is not limited to New York State
• Candidates licensed solely as cytotechnologists or histotechnologists may only be assigned work in their specific discipline/specialty
• Candidates licensed as clinical laboratory technologists may be assigned work in all laboratory disciplines/specialties
