Laboratory Technician, Jr

About the role

Under immediate supervision, the Technician, Laboratory Junior Minerals performs routine laboratory tests to determine chemical and physical characteristics or composition of solid, liquid, or gaseous materials for quality control, process control, or product development.

Responsibilities

• Performs routine laboratory testing, following relevant company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and methods.
• Prepares representative subsamples from client samples using defined methods (dry, crush, pulverize, sieve, mix, riffle split, etc.).
• Weighs and digests samples for analysis using relevant equipment.
• Completes and maintains laboratory reports.
• Receives, sorts, and logs client samples into the database, and prepares sample labels.
• Archives, returns, or disposes of client samples as per established procedure.
• Prepares monthly composites.
• Performs daily, weekly, and monthly Quality Assurance/Quality Control checks on equipment.
• Demonstrates good and safe work habits and enforces a clean working environment.
• Performs general upkeep and housekeeping of the laboratory.
• Ensures all equipment and containers are organized and cleaned before and after use.
• Ensures all personal protective equipment (PPE) relevant for tasks is worn as required.
• Ensures compliance with all required local and federal safety processes and procedures.
• May have preparation or field responsibilities as required by business needs.
• Adheres to internal standards, policies, and procedures.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent (required).
• Some laboratory experience is an asset.
• Science-related study is an asset.
• No experience required unless mandated by state law.
• Valid and current Driver’s license may be required if the role involves driving a company vehicle (required).
• Must obtain a 24-hour surface Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) certificate; training is available through SGS (required).

Work Environment

This job operates in a laboratory environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, printers, and phones. Laboratory equipment may include:

• Sample prep equipment: Crusher, Bowl & Disc Pulverizing Mills, Pulverizers, Riffle Splitters, Gilson Sieve, Compressed Air.
• Laboratory instruments: Balances, Muffle Furnace, Calorimeters, Sulfur Analyzer, Ash Fusion Analyzer, TGA Thermo-Gravimetrical Analyzer, Compressed gases.

Schedule

12-hour rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays.

• Days: 7 AM to 7 PM
